Jamie meets the people affected by these pig issues – from the café owner who wants to buy British but can't afford to, to the lifelong pig farmer struggling to make ends meet by the unfair competition. "Nearly 70 per cent of what we import into this country would have come from pigs that would have been illegal to produce in this country," explains Barney Kaye from the National Pig Association.
Eager to see the sow pens in operation Jamie heads to Denmark to see the state of pig farming overseas. Pork producers, Danish Crown, have agreed to take him around some farms but when he arrives they're reluctant to show him any farms other than those with above average welfare standards. These would still only meet the UK's minimum requirements.
Jamie quizzes the farmer about castration – a controversial subject in the industry as it is normally carried out without anaesthetic. But again, Anne, the company's PR, is reluctant to go into detail. "Do you think it's in the public's interest not to see?" asks Jamie. "I think it's in the company's interest," admits Anne.
