2. Pig Brother

There's a spectrum of pig rearing techniques used in Britain, from free range porkers to less lucky swine raised indoors on slatted floors. But in Britain that's as bad as it gets. Elsewhere in the EU pregnant pigs may be kept in sow pens where they can stand up and sit down but not turn around. "They eat in one end and shit out of the other." Jamie tells it like it is.
To hammer the point home, Jamie's set up 'Pig Brother' where five volunteers are kept in human equivalents to the sow pens for as long as they can stand it, toilet conditions and all. The volunteer 'piggies' include a make-up fanatic, an exercise freak, a country girl and… Joanna Lumley!
Jamie lets Joanna out for a chat about some pig issues. She's patron of Compassion in World Farming and cares deeply about the welfare of animals bred for food. "All living creatures value freedom almost above everything else. It's so important for people to understand what it's like to have your freedom taken away," says Joanna.
Though illegal in Britain, sow pens will not be banned in the EU until 2013. A situation Jamie believes leaves British farmers on an uneven playing field.
