This size of pig breeding herd in Britain has halved in the last 10 years as British farmers abiding by mandatory UK standards of animal welfare struggle to compete with their less constrained European cousins. Jamie thinks it's time we saved our bacon.
He's on a mission to show us the whole lifecycle from piglet to plate, taking in birth, reproduction and death. Jamie starts at the beginning as a sow in the studio goes into labour. "It's good for me to see this as I've got one of my own coming in a couple of months," Jamie quips. That's reassuring for Jules.
Stockman, Owen, is on piglet duty and Roger the vet steps in to lend a hand. Together the team help to deliver the first of a subsequent 13 piglets. "This is quite a humbling thing," admits Jamie. "This is why the life of a pig and the welfare of a pig is so incredibly important."
