2. Taking it to the workplace
2. Taking it to the workplace (Image 2 of 8)
The last time there was a food crisis - the Second World War - the government created its own Ministry of Food where teams of ladies taught the nation to cook via public demos and workplace workshops. This patriarchal approach to food training gives Jamie an idea. What if he could get company bosses on board to allow cooking classes in the workplace at lunchtime?
To trial his idea he ropes in Mick the miner to teach his fellow miners at the Maltby pit. None of them have cooked before and they've had to give up their lunch break but the miners really dig it. Mick's a natural. "It's easy this," he says with a sly smile at Jamie. "I could do this for a living."
But teaching Maltby's miners is not enough for Jamie. By now his pass it on project should have seen his recipes change hands 16,000 times. At the last count it was 207.
