Caring for climbers

Water climbing veg well in dry spells. Tie in or pinch out rogue shoots, keep weeds down, and check for pests and diseases like caterpillars and whitefly.

Some veg, like squash, pumpkin and trailing marrows, will get pretty big and weigh low to the ground.

So nest straw underneath to stop them from rotting or being eaten by slugs.

Where you want to further maximise growing space, freestanding supports are worth considering too.

Wooden obelisks or a teepee made from bamboo or willow stakes will enable you to pack in more crops. They work well in containers too.

  • Pumpkins - e.g. One Two Many
  • Climbing French beans - e.g. Cobra
