If you want to grow pumpkins, you'll need a bit of room – the plants are true giants, producing sprawling vines that can spread to 4.5m (15ft).

Once you've got the space issue sorted, you'll find all you really need for a bumper crop is a sunny plot, well-prepared ground and plenty of water.

While the traditional orange lantern-type is the best known, pumpkins come in a wide range of sizes and colours – many of which look and taste fantastic.

What you will need

  • Packet of pumpkin seed
  • Small pots for sowing (indoors)
  • Seed and cutting compost for sowing (indoors)
  • Potting compost (indoors)
  • Well-rotted manure or garden compost
  • Liquid plant food
  • Spade
  • Straw
