Potato growing guide

Scarcely a day passes by without spuds putting in an appearance on our dinner plates.

Given that home-grown potatoes taste far superior to their shop-bought counterparts, it only makes sense to set aside some space (or at least a container) for them on your plot.

There are many different varieties, which can be broadly classified as either 'earlies', which produce new potatoes, and 'main crops', which constitute the remainder. Both types are planted in a similar way and at almost the same time, although they are harvested at different points in the season.

What you will need

  • Seed potatoes
  • Cardboard egg boxes
  • Garden compost
  • General-purpose fertiliser
  • Spade
  • Fork

  1. My potatoes are just flowering ... but what can I grow in the soil once I have harvested?

  2. What I saw on British TV was potatoes grown in a plastic bag with potting soil and slite in the bag for the plants to grow from. The bag was leaned up against a sunny side of your house. I live in a condo and this was an attractive way to grow veggies without needing a garden. I just can't remember if he used potatoes with eyes and roots to begin with or how the entire process was done. Please advise. Thanks.
