Grow your own carrots

Carrots have come a long way from their humble origins as a wild plant with bitter-tasting purple roots.

Today they are among the sweetest and most colourful vegetables, particularly popular with child-gardeners who love to dig up the tasty treasure hidden beneath the soil.

The key to successful carrots is the soil preparation - you'll need to thoroughly dig the patch of ground where they are to be sown to remove any lumps and stones which could hinder their growth.

Sow a selection of different varieties and you could be lifting tasty roots from June to October, and with careful storage enjoying them well into the winter.

What you will need

  • A packet of carrot seeds
  • Multipurpose compost
  • Garden compost
  • Sharp sand
  • Containers
