Sorrel is a hardy perennial herb which is grown for its edible leaves - these have a sharp lemony flavour and are used for making sorrel soup, mixing into summer salads or adding flavour to omelettes and sandwiches.

They can also be cooked like spinach and turned into a purée for serving with rich meats and fish dishes.

What you will need

  • A packet of sorrel seeds and plant labels
  • A modular seed tray (for sowing the seeds under cover only)
  • Seed compost (for sowing the seeds under cover only)
  • A garden fork and a rake for preparing the seed-sowing area
  • A general organic fertiliser
  • A length of string with pegs at each end for marking out individual seed drills
  • A short stick for creating the seed drills
  • A watering can
  • A cloche (low protective plant cover) if you want to harvest some sorrel leaves in the winter
