How to grow rhubarb
Rhubarb is a hardy vegetable and very simple to grow. It produces edible and succulent pink-red stems from February to June, which can be used in chutneys, crumbles, jams, pies, yoghurts and mousses.
The large leaves make the plants highly attractive in the garden.
What you will need
- Some dormant rhubarb crowns or container-grown rhubarb plants
- A spade for digging over the planting site
- Well-rotted garden compost or manure
- A general organic fertiliser and a garden rake
- A supply of horse manure and straw (for forcing an early crop only – see Planting Guide)
- A forcing pot (for forcing an early crop only – see Planting Guide)
