There are generally two types of broad bean - 'longpods' which have long and slender pods and kidney-shaped beans and 'windsors' whose pods are shorter and broader with rounded beans. Some of the best varieties include:
One of the best broad beans for an autumn or late winter sowing as it is very tough and reliable. It produces long pods and tasty beans but, once established, needs staking as it reaches around 90cm (3ft) in height.
A tall and heavy-cropping broad bean for spring sowing. It produces extra long pods filled with very tasty green beans.

A prolific variety for small and exposed gardens, as it only grows up to 45cm (1ft 6in) high and shouldn't be blown over or need staking. For the earliest crop of beans, sow under cloches in the autumn or late winter and remove the cloches if the plants reach the tops. Can also be sown outdoors throughout the spring.
The earliest-maturing spring-sown variety. It is quick-growing and very flavoursome.
