At 98,000 square feet and serving 65,000 customers per week, Sydenham is a huge step up from Joseph's small store in Derby. There, he has 16 colleagues. Here, he will have 800.
"I feel like Dorothy," he gasps. "I've just landed in Oz."
Joseph's first task is to run the produce department. It’s the jewel in the crown of any store and here in Sydenham, 20 per cent of the store's trade comes from the fresh fruit and vegetable department.
With 600 product lines and six members of staff to manage, Joseph struggles to step back from the manual work, and the department quickly runs away from him.
