Sainsbury's Chief Executive, Justin King, has a vision. He believes the company's next big idea will come, not from the directors and executives, but from workers on the shop floor.

Joseph Showler joined Sainsbury's 9 months ago and works as a supervisor in one of the company's small convenience stores in Derby. He has an idea to change the layout of the store, maximising attention on new lines, to stop them going unrecognised and ending up in the bargain bins.

Joseph's confidence in his own talent is impressive.
"It's going to sounds vain but it's unending," he says, "I've got the potential to do whatever I like if I put my mind to it."
Will Sainsbury's agree?

I do think the program didnt show much of josephs bets side, he was at a slight disadvantage though but maybe they were thinking he would pick things up

Joseph was used as a human guinea pig by Sainsburys,they tried to fast track him which was un achievable.The manager was so cliched it was unbelievable.

I totally agree with Sue's comments above. Sainsburys know the game. They know how recruitment works. They know full well that even the most capable trainee would not develop the leadership skills that they were asking Joseph to develop in three weeks. They would have had the resources at their fingertips, to have assessed Joseph and seen if he was up to this challenge. They understand the difference between leaders and managers. I could go on. The whole idea was incredibly unfair to Joseph. Although the coaching and the mentoring skills of those supposedly there to help Joseph were so poor; perhaps Sainsburys don't understand these things.

I was appalled at the treatment of Joseph by senior management notably the manager at the Sydenham store. Do all Sainsbury's managers speak in "Corporate Speak" towards their staff? I thought his attitude towards Joseph was offensive. Calling in several people from the shop floor to discuss him behind his back was actually quite insulting and not a good management tactic. The whole programme was geared towards Joseph failing - I think he was out of his depth but that doesn't excuse the way he was treated. Fast tracking is all well and good but it doesn't suit everybody. I think Joseph deserves an apology from Sainsburys.
