According to Heston, the Middle Ages were all about medieval food entertainment with chefs embarking on gastronomic trickery to entertain and thrill their guests.
"[Chefs] used food as an entertaining escape from the brutality of life," explains Heston. With 60 per cent of Europe's population perishing from the Plague and the rest not expected to make it past 25, they needed some cheering up.
Singer, Liz McClarnon, comedian, John Thomson and feisty academic, Germaine Greer join chef, Andi Oliver, choreographer, Craig Revel Horwood and actor Bill Paterson for Heston's medieval meal. But Bill's not looking too keen. "I hope there's no Black Death," he grimaces.
No death on the menu, Bill, but there is some fruit that's made from meat, a pie full of live birds and knives and forks that you can eat.
