Heston's back doing what he does best: cooking up a feast

The future of cooking, Heston tells us, lies in the secret recipes of the past. The gastronomic adventurer heads back in time through a myriad of historical and mythical culinary worlds on a mission to recreate famous period dishes for the ultimate 21st century banquets.

In each episode, Heston explores a period of extraordinary gastronomic innovation; recreating ‘lost’ recipes, discovering forgotten flavours and ingredients and travelling to remote areas to source unusual foods. His culinary quest takes him through Victorian Britain and Tudor England to the Medieval era and Ancient Rome.

Daring dishes on the menu include an entirely edible garden with insects, 24 blackbirds baked in a pie, a Trojan Hog with edible intestines and an unusual ‘ejaculating’ cake. Each of Heston’s historical quests will culminate in a spectacular banquet laid on for a boisterous bunch of celebrity diners.

This isn’t cooking for amateurs – so throw away your cookbooks and definitely don't try this at home.

Feast begins Tuesday 3rd March at 9pm on Channel 4 (Repeat, Sunday 8th March at 7pm on Channel 4)
Next episode: Medieval Feast, Tuesday 10th March at 9pm on Channel 4

  5. I can honestly say this is the most stomach churning cookery programme i've ever watched on tv! I agree that it's not suitable for mainstream tv - and i'm no prude - and it is a different spin on things, but there does seem to be something highly barbaric and repulsive about the whole thing. Are cookery programmes supposed to make you feel sick?

  8. After watching Heston's feast last night I came away amazed at how the Romans were much more advaced than I had previously thought. It seems that every Roman kitchen was furnished with equipment to freeze CO2 and produce dry ice. Incredidle! no wonder the empire lasted so long. However, if this wasn't the case, how DID the Romans make their ejaculating cakes? presumably they had to fall back on Coca Cola and Chewy Mints?

  12. Heston you can come along to any of my parties... great to see food and science come together. where do you find half of the equipment.. maybe you should setup a business to start selling unusual cooking utensils. not sure i can remake any of the receipes. how about for the next series we get to send on ingredients/ideas and you have to find ways to cook them?

  13. I love the food Heston is creating, it is utterly amazing, but please stop telling us historical facts that are just gibberish!! Sorry to be a pedant but have to address the following! The medieval people did not burn witches. That was mainly a 17th century pass time and when we did kill them we hung them. Medieval people did not believe that all raw fruits and veg would kill them. The job of wiping the King's bottom (the Groom of the Stool) was not there to emphasis the rich / poor divide. The Groom of the Stool was one of the most important jobs in the country, only for the extremely wealthy, and not, as far as I know, Medieval. The Victorians did not invent dildos nor did their doctors use masterbation as a way of curing female mania. Phew! I'm sorry. It's just that's been driving me nuts!! Great food though - perhaps stick to that Heston, and leave history alone.

  14. I watched last night's show with a mixture of horror and disgust. The purchasing of live frogs which were then put into plastic bags which were then put inside another platic bag to suffocate was appalling. They were then removed ina kichen and their heads summarily "humanely" chopped off!! I won't even mention the abonination that was the cockatrice which Hestons kept mispronouncing. This is not suitable for mainstream television, and as for the baying guests at the table, desperate to get their faces seen, a touch of the emperor's new clothes. Someeone tell Heston that this is sick!!!

Lovely to see Martins Ritins - a family friend. He certainly looks better than when we last saw him. Fascinating foods. I have always been interested in food history. Wish I could afford your books though, but being unemployed .....

  19. Heston might be a good chef but he's certainly no historian. In the first programme he laughably maintained the Victorians invented the steam train and last night he told us that the people of medieval times thought the earth was flat. Totally wrong on both counts, which makes me wonder how much of the other historical %u201Cresearch%u201D is wrong?

  25. call it a turtle if you like, as it lived in a country unable to distinguish turtles, terrapins and tortoises. it still would not taste anything like the sea turtles that the victorians ate. the issue of killing animals for entertainment aside, it is the in-authenticity that bothered me and uncharacteristic lack of attention to detail. all that time spent travelling to the US could have been spent cleaning the kitchen ;-)

  31. There is a very good reason why turtle meat could not be found in Europe. The poor turtle was killed then just wasted?? Why wasn't it just left where it was? A complete lack of respect for the animal, I used to hold Heston in high esteem but I feel extremely disappointed by his callous attitude towards the creature he killed.

  32. I watched Heston this evening for the first time and I must say that it was the first time that a cooking programme has left me not only beaming but also wishing to try some of the extraordinary dishes that he produced courtesy of ideas from Carol's Mad Hatter's Tea Party. His creativity leaves me slobberingly open-mouthed. I look forward to the medieval feast with great anticipation perhaps even excitement.

  39. poor research here. the 'turtle' pointlessly killed to attempt to make soup was (despite the name) a terrapin; about as similar to a sea turtle as fish to chicken. not that i'm suggesting a green sea turtle or loggerhead should have been sacrificed, but the habitat and diet are completely different, so too presumably, would the flavour be. and a little effort would have revealed that the hallucinogenic ingredient in absinthe is wormwood; including it in the drink has been illegal in france for some time. to really find la faie verte, look further east where the original recipe is still followed.

  40. I watched the programme with fascination as I was curious to see what Heston would come up with for his Victorian feast, Alice in Wonderland being my favourite childhood book and Aspects of Alice the adult version. I was enthralled by his determination to produce his five flavoured potion and the beautiful gold leafed fob watch of concentrated consomme. What an interesting alchemist he is and I do feel rather jealous of his train of thought. The whole programme kept me glued to the television which is unusual for me as Top Gear and QI are the only other programmes I watch. I cannot wait for the next feast. I would like to have seen a caterpillar or some sort of pupae on a mushroom in the garden but I could not have envisaged such a vision of loveliness, much better than the little gardens I used to create in biscuit tins as a child. If only I could have been one of the guests at that table. I think I may have wept for the nostalgia and sheer beauty of it all. I send my respect to this unique and innovative 'chef.' Oh and I bought some Absynthe, thought it was time I tried some of that, I have always fancied being a 'green fairy'

  47. I liked the show. It had some pretty incredibly bizarre but incredibly spectacular food creations in it. Don't try this at home Heston says (believe me mate, I won't be!). Makes a change from the usual Ramsay and Oliver stuff but watching all the trouble he goes to, to make this and the huge amount of money I'm sure he spent, it makes you wonder if it's actually worth it. Especially at this time when I'm just about broke.

  50. This is an example of an idle hedonistic world that is interested on taking everythng to extreme in order to entartain people that have everything. I thought it is quite a bad taste to spend so much money on making bugs taste good and things whch nobody will ever try. I found it very boring especially the quests- pseudo celebrities who where there only to say "wow".

  63. I thought that this first episode was magical - it's so lovely to watch his creativity and the patience and painstaking attention to detail involved in the creation of the feast (how many times was that Mock Turtle soup frozen and defrosted?) It is so refreshing to watch a cookery programme and not even consider reaching for a pen and paper to jot down the ingredients; us mere mortals have neither the budget nor the passion for culinary and historical accuracy as Mr Blumenthal, we could never recreate what he does! Better to just enjoy watching the recipients' amazed faces and enthusiastic response. I for one shall never look at jelly in quite the same way again...

  78. i really love hestons style of cooking and also that ejaculating cake which look the business. I also would love to learn how to make the glow in the dark jelly, but somehow i dont think it would look appetising.
