Heston's Feasts Heston's Roman Feast

Heston Blumenthal comes to the end of his gastronomic adventure through time with a final stop in the Roman era

Ancient Roman cuisine meant theatrical, devious and orgasmic food. The Romans had few boundaries and unusual appetites, eating everything from flamingos to parrot tongues and jellyfish.

In this episode, Heston creates a Roman feast for a group of celebrity diners including comedians Alexander Armstrong and Danny Wallace, actress Greta Scacchi, the Marquess of Bath, TV presenter Lisa Butcher and food critic Matthew Fort.

On the Roman menu

The feast includes pig nipple scratchings, calf's brain custard, and a slow-cooked hog filled with edible intestines made from chicken and a cocoa mixture. And for pudding, Heston rolls out the ultimate naughty Roman dessert: an unusual ejaculating cake featuring white chocolate mousse, space dust and dry ice.

  4. Hi Becka, Thank you or your suggestions, I have checked out the timesonline site and I have also sourced a no-bake recipe that doesnt include peanut butter, why I didn't think of that I don't know! I will give them both a try. Thank you again xx

  5. The thing with the space-dust biscuit seems to be that if you bake them, *they don't work*. The dust just melts. So you'll need to find "no-bake" or refrigerator-cookie recipes, and add the popping candy into them. Or something akin to a cheesecake base might work too. I also found this which looks quite nice: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/heston_blumenthal/article736732.ece Another Heston recipe! ;) To MrsMeem13 - You could make them tiny as a dessert for your wedding, decorate with a sprinkling of more popping candy, or some sherbet? Hope this helps guys! xxx

  7. Right people I tried making biscuits with space dust but the space dust melted in the oven. But eyes down for chris's chocolate cornflake suprise. Melt the chocolate Add Cornflakes Put in fridge for 5 mins to cool chocolate mix Add to the Mix (When cool) about 6-8 packets of space candy Put back in fridge to cool candy for a couple of mins Put mixture in cake cases then chill These work really well I took them to work and they went down a treat. Enjoy my friends

  15. Hello, I'm not happy with the way the live fish was slit with a knife to extract some kind of liquid for a bizzare roman dish. This must be illegal and sends a bad message out to other who think they can kill animals in this barbaric way.

  16. I thought the show was fantastic and intresting. This show was really funny in parts. Sometimes it was very gruesome and vile but the recipes were intresting in a way. I really enjoyed the Victorian and Roman feast. You have changed cooking for ever and have changed the way i think about it. But i also enjoyed the other episodes. I think making the jelly move was fantastic aswell as the the Trojan Hog, and i do agree that Italian dude was a nutter. I have really enjoyed the show and cant wait for what you do next. P.S Recipe for the Space Dust shortbread please!!!

  18. This is the second time I have posted- I felt the Roman feast programme was too shallow looking only at the foods ate by the aristocracy! Romans didnt have just a few courses but many more. Having had a 13 course Roman Meal with the emperor Nero in Italy as part of the Forum Fulvi celebrations Heston should have stuck to the actual recipes rather than his interpretaion of it with up to date twists! Simple Breads or Honey cake would have been nice to see as well as the extravagant. It would have been good if he had consulted some Roman research groups who actually cook real Roman recipes! However I did find the programme entertaining but agree with another poster that he should have used members of the general public as well as food critics. This might have enabled more discussion or were the food critics scared of a bit of challenging from the general population

  21. Having just watched the final programme of Heston's Feasts, I must confess to being utterly disgusted at the gutting of live fish just to make a programme. His programmes, although quite entertaining with the strange diversity of recipes I feel, has been let down by this part of the programme. In a society where animal welfare is so frequently talked about (especially by tv chefs'), I found this to be of extreme bad taste and probably not really required for the purpose of making a programme.

  26. I wish to complain bitterly about last night's Hestons Roman Feast programme. His lack of emotion or feelings for other creatures on our plant is appalling. His actual pleasure in slicing the belly of a live fish was abosulutely obscene. Did he not think that this poor animal had feelings, and the others he slaughtered in the process once more in the pursuit of so called "entertainment"!

  27. I really enjoyed the series, it was fantastic in all concepts of the word. The only problem I had was with the choice of guests. Why have celebrities?? They can enjoy Heston's food whenever they like and have the chance to taste strange and wonderful things with a lot more frequency than most people. I think this series, and many of Heston's similar series would benefit from having everyday people tasting his food- students, kids, the kind of people who would truly appreciate the experience and who would be a lot more interesting to watch. Fewer egos please!!

  35. I agree with many here: superb television! Heston is a total original and The Fat Duck is rightly hailed as the best restaurant in the country. I wonder if any elements of his feast programmes will find their way onto the menu there? I also agree that members of the public, rather than celebrities, should be feasting on his delicious-looking and spectacularly theatrical dishes. Perhaps a raffle would be an idea - with the chance to eat his food being the prize!

  37. Hi , It very interesting about the trojan hog - I come from Tunisia and Tunisians Do use Sheep and Cows intestines : they clean them and they do fill them with either Couscous or rice or barely "Melthouth" (simlar to couscous ) including livers and stomachs and small pieces of meats and fat which has already been boiled . Am just as curious which was first Roman to use it or Carthaginians ? You might be able to find that out ... Thanks
