Women under 35 don't cook. Fact or fiction?

Gordon's 'Get Women Back in the Kitchen' campaign has caused some controversy, but it isn't about forcing anyone in the kitchen who doesn't want to be there. It's about helping women who want Gordon's help.

The F Word survey found that three quarters of women who can't cook regret not being able to cook.

It's not that they can't cook and don't care though - they can't cook but they wish they could. It's these women that Gordon wants to help get back into their kitchens.

GP Helen Sutherland was a self-confessed kitchen-phobic. Find out more about how Gordon has helped her to cook some flaming good food. Read Helen's story.

To find out what Gordon's really like, we talked to his wife Tana about his campaign, cooking, and how she copes with Gordon rearing their next meal in the garden.

  1. I am a 44 yr old mother/homemaker I love to cook but hate to bake. I like not having to use recipes. I dont use measurements I go by taste. But for all of the working mothers who dont feel you have the time to cook try using a crock pot put it together in the morning turn it on low and go and when you get home there you go a nicely cooked meal. with little to do. I have found that anything you cook in the oven roasts, chicken, sauasage liver or whatever you can put together in the crock pot. My children love my shredded italian beef sandwiches, my sausage and potatoes with french onion soup, potatoe soup with amish noodles, chicken noodle soup with croutons. There are alot of recipes you can try it saves time for people who have very little time.

  4. Wonder how many quarters of men under 35 cook... wouldnt mind a show to help them finally GET IN THE KITCHEN. Yeah, getting over the culture of gender roles and oppression seemed like a very bad idea... backlash, anyone?

  7. I am a married 24 year old mother of one and I've been cooking at home since I was 12. About then my mother stopped cooking and figure we could make our own food if we were hungry. I think this campaign is a great idea because cooking has been lost on my generation. My mother didn't teach me to cook and it wasn't a class offered in school. Most everything I know about cooking comes from Food Network, other cooking shows, or experience. Just want to say thank you to Mr. Ramsey for starting this campaign. Hopefully women in the US will catch on to this as well.

  8. I'm a 47 year old single woman (always been single) and I think the disappearance of cooking skills in American women is terrible. I don't even think they offer ANY Home Ec education in the schools anymore. I firmly believe BOTH men and women should learn to cook. Had my younger brother not been able to do some cooking when he first married they would have starved. His bride was the youngest of FOUR sisters, all taught their role in life was to marry and have babies, but mama dear NEVER taught them to cook. That was criminal in my opinion. Women are KILLING our kids with these prepackaged boxed, frozen, canned, bottled and packaged foods their stuffing in the faces of their families these days. They're eating more chemicals than they are real food. Sure, a little convenience is fine at times but when did it become wrong to cook. In the long run it's costing American families BILLIONS in their grocery bills buying this stuff. If women would get organized they could actually cook homemade meals through the weeks JUST AS FAST as the prepackaged stuff. My mother worked full time my entire childhood and she had a hot cooked dinner on the table usually within 30-45 minutes every night. She taught me well and also taught my brother how to cook some. Men need this skill just as much as women. It's all in the prep and the planning ahead. AND, we're not even getting into the topic of freezing and canning here and that lost art. So....I firmly agree with Gordon and agree that both countries need to start making a much bigger effort to bring back this lost art.

  9. The F word has just been aired in Mexico. I really enjoy the show and enjoy cooking. I do all de cooking at my home because I think is better tasting, healthier and less fattening, BUT IT IS A VERY HARD WORK. It is not only the cooking itself, but going shopping for fresh ingredients, planning menus, and cleaning; it is a full-time professional job, and unfortunately at home it doesn't get paid or really apprecciated. Modern women have more busy schedules to attend to do all this. If you are ever interested in Mexican food I can show you around very good places to lunch or share recipes.

  10. I just happened to catch this show on BBC America. I wss about to flip the channel when I heard Gordon mention the getting women back in the kitchen. I had to keep watching to see exactly what he meant! Well, the F Word is on my DVR now, lol. My mother got cancer when I was very young and she passed on when I was 11. My father didn't know how to cook so we were both sunk. I never was taught how to cook. My hubby was however, but with his schedule he is not generally here for dinner. I can't even think of things to make for lunch let alone dinner! I am just kitchen phobic. There is something about it that makes me hyperventalate and if there are more than a couple of ingredients I just give up. I have tried so many things and now we pretty much either eat premade foods or we eat out. I am overweight, my older son is getting there and I know I am not teaching them good eating habits, but I don't know how to eat right so how am I supposed to teach them!!?? So... I just wanted to say 'THANK YOU' Mr. Ramsay!!!! I will be diligently watching your show to pick up any tips! I think what you are doing is phenominal! And what is really great is that no one in America would have had the balls to get on national television and say 'let's get women back into the kitchen' because in our horribly politically correct society, it would have never made it past the censors even if it wasn't meant badly, lol. I hope to see a show (hopefully you haven't done it already and I missed it) where you show a kitchen phobic mom of three how to shop, prepare and cook for the family while working around two kids sports activities and school. That would be a life saver!

  11. Love the f word here in Canada, and love the campaign to get woman back in the kitchen although I do think being able to spend time in the kitchen is a very hard thing for most working moms as they are usually doing a million other tasks and as i always say men really only have one hand and do ot usually multitask very well. Your programme is funny and very interesting with a wide variety of information that is educational and inspiring. Thanks Gordon Ramsey for making t.v worth watching. Kim
