When Giles Coren signed up to be the F Word’s resident food critic he probably didn’t envisage he’d be spending any time in the nation’s sewers.
He did just that, and he learned a thing or two about fat and how it effects our drains. Fat is a big problem in Britain. Fats, oils and grease can cause a huge amount of damage if you pour it down the drain– like most of us do.
As it cools, it sets and hardens, blocking up pipes and sewers as it goes. Last year alone, we spent 15 million pounds clearing our pipes and 3000 properties were flooded as a result of blockage. With Christmas approaching, water companies around the country are expecting a 25% increase in fat being poured down the drain.
So, what's the lesson to be learnt? Don’t throw your fat down the drain! Bag it and bin it. Or, an alternative is to use a fat trap. One water company is giving away free fat traps to help with the problem. Fat Traps are available free of charge to United Utilities customers to help keep their drains fat free. They are screw-top containers in which fat can be collected, then thrown away in the bin or mixed with nuts, seeds or breadcrumbs to feed garden birds.

Cooking fat is also being recycled to make bio-diesel, a fuel made from vegetable fat and oil. You can actually run your car on a fuel made from used cooking fat! For more information on Bio diesel production, check out
