Cath explains that while smoothies have plenty of positive attributes, sugar is sugar and the natural stuff will have the same calorie load and negative affects on the teeth as the artificial kind.
"If you're having an apple there's about 10g of sugar in that," explains Cath. "So if you're having a smoothie you can be having three times that in one little drink and you swallow that in less than a minute."
That's a lot of sugar in a short space of time and by Cath's calculations drinking a smoothie a day could see people put on up to a stone a year in weight.
