Opening an English restaurant in Italy - a recipe for disaster?

In this brand new series, restauranteur and entrepreneur Vito Cataffo sets out on an epic quest, staking his personal fortune and his hard won reputation on a deep-set personal belief: that British food is the best in the world.

Vito launches a culinary crusade to Italy, the country of his birth. The series follows Vito as he finds a failing Italian restaurant, rescues and renovates it, and then sets about transforming it into a shrine to British food.

From managing the building project to navigating the murky world of Italian bureaucracy; from training-up local chefs and waiting staff to his exacting standards, to capturing the hearts and stomachs of the Italian public with Great British grub, Vito is facing the most daunting crusade of his life.

  1. 'Restaurateur' doesn't have an 'n' as written in the first line of your editorial. Your standards are slipping Channel Four!

  4. Hi Neil, do you really think 170*c is a high enough temperature for the meat to brown quick. Sealing the meat caramelize's the latic sugars, this can only be done at high temperatures. Would you like to explain the lack of seasoning, surely even you can agree that this is essential. The Ploughman's Lunch on tonights episode was below par too. Vito Cataffo is suppose to be taking the best of British, he may be finding good ingredients but he doesn't seem to be using them to there full potential. I will bet any money that the restaurant will be closed or up for sale by the time the series ends. Good Luck!

  5. I think this idea will work. Good luck,Vito. British fayre is, from what I can see, a lot like Italian food. In that it is simple, honest grub. I think the Italians will recognise and appreciate this.

  8. Hi Craig, why do you assume he would need to "seal" the meat if he is cooking at high enough temperatures to promote surface browning anyway ?

  9. I'm surprised to see a chef whose suppose to be taking the best of British to Italy cook a strip of fillet for 1 hour 30 thirty minutes on 170'c, without sealing it. Didn't see any seasoning either. If thats Vito Cataffo's best chef to produce British food for the Italians then the business will be closed before the series ends. Smallest Yorkshire pudding i've ever seen too. Good Luck

  15. Thoroughly enjoyable watch! Great to see Vito championing British produce in his homeland. Can't wait to see how things unfurl and hope his restaurant is a huge success. Makes me proud to be British, we have so much to offer the world and we should all shout about it with as much enthusiasm as Vito.

  17. I think this has potential to work because Italian's are not completly anti foriegn food as the program tries to make out. I recently visited Milan and was amazed at how many ethnic resaturants there are! Both British and Italian cuisine are nice in their own way!
