Stock up your cupboards - it's time to take part in Cookalong Live: The series week 5

Salt and pepper are required for both starter and main courses

On the menu (serves 4)

Starter: Hot and sour prawn soup

Hot and sour soup

800ml chicken stock
1-2 large red chillies
3cm piece of ginger, peeled
2 lemongrass stalks
4 tbsp fish sauce, to taste
3-4 tbsp lime juice, to taste
1 tbsp caster sugar
Freshly ground black pepper
100g shiitake mushrooms, halved
250g raw prawns, shelled and deveined
Small bunch of coriander, chopped

Main course: Stir fried beef with peppers and egg noodles

Stir fried beef

500g lean beef steak, such as fillet
2 garlic cloves, peeled
3cm piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated
1 large red pepper
3 spring onions
1 red chilli
150g beansprouts
300g medium egg noodles
Handful of coriander leaves
Soy sauce
Groundnut oil
Toasted sesame oil

For the sauce:

2 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1tbsp toasted sesame oil

Dessert: Gordon's hot bananas

3 medium bananas
75g caster sugar
15g unsalted butter
½ red chilli, deseeded, finely sliced
50ml dark rum
60ml coconut milk
Small tub of vanilla ice cream

  2. well gorden it seems you were once a god, now a mere mortal being.... it was hard to follow, mainly as the tv was not in sight or hearing range. but our own ways with a zing worked better, and we were one step ahead, until you took that buffalo wing out! Many jokes now, now its time for MY hot bananas!

  3. Cant wait until tonight, last weeks menu cooked by sis in law was fab, my turn tonight! Have a pregnant girl and a vegetarian in the company therefore, substituting the prawn soup for carrot and coriander to stick with the asian theme. Love to Gordon and his family at this time!   9. Looking 4ward to week 5 menu, sooo excited invited 15 friends over to witness my efforts. Am normally a can't cook, won't cook but am inspired to go for it. Well it won't be as bad as my efforts on the original cookalong in when I had to ask for assistance from my 7 year old. Keep cookingxxxxxxxxx

  10. Suitable substitute for the prawns in the soup? My family don't like them - but would love to continue with the soup if we could. Ideas?
