  3. My boyfriend and I were really looking froward to the cook along. How disappointing - the swearing, sexual innuendos and total lack of respect for food really did make for a truly tacky and piontless show. I assumed the point of cooking along meant exactly that - not throwing expensive ingredients around and making a total mess. Channel 4 have made you look a fool Gordon, and as for the "STAR" guest ... I could go on ..

  4. Please could we have the shopping list ready for Friday, it would be ideal if it was posted after the show on the Friday night so that I can buy it over the weekend! Aboslutely loved the show and thought Patsy was a great help in getting Gordon to slow down a bit occasionally!

  6. Totally agree with all the comments regarding the unnecessary swearing, comsidering these TV chefs are so passionate about the standards of the food they are involved with they should maintain their standards in their conduct

  8. Great programme - but PLEASE could Gordon go just a little bit slower and have the camera stay on the food and preparation so we can see exactly what he is doing as that is much more important than any guest celebrity.

  12. wooow!! nice one gordon the salmon was awesome when i cooked it. Im only 13 but so intregued by it. It tastes nice in a course with homemade creme brule!! There was a lot of pastry for the fish but the unsalted butter and dill and basil was really tasty. The salmon was quite expensive at £10 but worth it and means ill be cooking it when i go away in the holidays. More cooking time!! :):):):):):)

  15. I watched this last night and thought it was great. I'm on a budget too, so I've been out to get the ingredients for just the salmon recipe as that looked awesome. The goats cheese did look nice, I might try that another time but just use a smaller volume of cheese cos the portions were pretty big. Great programme!

  18. Very very very disappointed. Downloaded the recipe on the 15/10/08 following a television advert only to find last night that the pastry had been left off the list. Please make sure if you are to advertise recipies that they are full and complete at the time of advertismement. Not at all happy complete waste of money!

  20. What a great evening we had, Thanks Gordon. Loads of laughs cooking together, if a bit manic, what with losing the remote control just when we wanted to pause the TV. Had a lot of the ingredients in the cupboard already, so it didnt cost us all that much, It was a very special 3 course meal at home. We also left the odd minor thing out. Next week may record and cook a bit earlier on another night. Will be recommending it to friends as it was so much fun.

  26. I would like to thank you personally Gordon for what was a lovely meal, however my wife made a magnificent effort with my 11 and 14 year old daughters only to be appalled by what is your trademark "language ". I work in the building trade and do not use that sort of language to people i don t even like let alone customers. You are without a doubt a genius in the kitchen but unfortunately my beautiful well adjusted daughters now think that the f word is a normal part of most peoples vocabulary. Please let me know as a parent how i explain to my kids that the f word is not to be used as an every day word. Yours respectfully, Martyn. P.s I still have not had my " pudding" as we could not keep up with the instructions ! x. I eagerly await your opinion G

  29. Loved the programme especially the new format where Gordon didn't swear so much!! Much better if not at all we don't like it. Jamie Oliver seems to have taken a leaf out of Gorsdon's book by swearing more in his new Ministry of Food series, so we tunred off last week and din't even turn it on this week.

  38. I'm a Food Tech teacher (NQT) and did the last one, but this is way out of my budget. The people saying 'it is not that expensive, £30 for all the ingredients' clearly have no idea what it is to really live on a tight budget. I have had to drop our 'food luxury' which was a weekly £6 take-away as money is so ridiculously tight. I would have loved to have joined in, and my daughter was looking forward to Sky 'ing it and doing it too. Gordon, you have made use feel sad :(

  39. So - you've not got enough cash - you're allergic to whatever - it's too late - NEVER MIND - just watch/record the programme - learn something (yes, you will) - use on another occasion with different ingredients/when you've got some cash/when you're awake...but the whole point is....GET COOKING. Get rid of the takeaways/ready meals, high in fat, sugar, salt and all the other stuff that's turning us into the fattest people in Europe. Cooking is FUN - even on Friday nights. And sooooooo much better for us all. Go for it GR.

  41. I like the menu but like some of the others that have posted its just a bit to late for us to start cooking and eating. I will be cooking it on another day. If you already have most of the basics in your store cupboard then its not so pricey. If however you dont usually cook, then I can see that the price would be high and you may be left with ingrients that you wouldn't use. Happy cooking

  54. Gord, this is ridiculous, so much stuff to buy. I'm a poor student and cannot therefore afford the food. I already know how to make crumble in my sleep and I can imagine that salmon en crut is not that hard. I'm guessing the starter is a walnut, apple and goats cheese salad, which again s not hard at all. Unless you incorporate the cheese into the salmon somehow. I was expecting something a lot better particularly with the cost issue- you could have made a bit more effort. Also I'm sure both the salmon and rhubarb are British even though rhubarb is out of season and the salmon is probably from Alaska.

  59. I was put off straightaway by the description of the salmon required. How on earth would anyone manage to get hold of that at the local supermarket? I was also put off by the quantity of ingredients. In these tough times it would be far more appropriate to select menus where the ingredients are easily accessible and not too expensive. Generally, I think the idea for the show is brilliant, but in practice this will not work.

Well Mr Ramsey, as Mary Macneal rightly says, only 5 months after announcing that UK restaurants should in fact be fined for not using seasonal produce, here you are cooking with Rhubarb which I only imagine to be Dutch! Gordon Ramsey should be fined I say! Where are the fantastic autumn berries and apples that our country produces? Isn't he supposed to be setting an example?

Cant wait for this one too, this is a fantastic idea in getting people in the kitchen learning new recipes and having a social get together at the same time......champagne at the ready!!

  79. looking forward to watching but wish for a menue that would be suitable for cealiacs instead of usual salad and meat and veg. I know that gluten free pastry could be used but it can be so difficult to deal with depending on what it is used for. maybe I will get some ideas from the series however will not be doing the cook along which is a shame, would have loved to have got in there with my sleeves rolled up.

  81. I was a bit disappointed to see that Gordon is using Rhubarb in his first cook along program - it is a great British ingredient especially when in season - at the moment in Britain it is not the Rhubarb season - at this time of the year there are lots of wonderful British apples and pear in seasn - it is a pity he has not used a product which is in season in Britain at the moment

  84. Sounds great - just a bit surprised that people don't have most of the basic ingrediants in their cupboard already and are moaning at the price?? It's fantastic that the tv chefs are once again reminding Britain that food doesn't evolve out of a plastic tray. Why is it on at 9 though on a Friday night? Surely 7 to eat at 8 would capture a wider audience?

  112. I am very surprised to see rhubarb on the menu at this time of year! I believe we should be using food that is In Season in the UK! 117. I am working my way through Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food at the moment. The family love it, and the meals are turning out to be very economical, especially when you can make so much from mince and braising steak. Gordon may be attracting a bigger purse, but any programme that promotes cooking for the family, and using fresh fruit and veg, has to be supported. We should all get behind him!

My daughter and I have laughed so hard at some of the comments, negative Britain hey, lets punish all the people that got off their bottoms and did something with their lives to only entertain the poor and unfortunate. I hate cooking however am going to purchase a LCD TV for the Kitchen and cook! who cares if I am eating at 12 (no one seems to mind when they are shoving a curry into their mouths at 1.00am after a night on the town)spending money on SKY TV, Internet Connection, Ciggs etc. so lets see what happens. We may all be sick or may all be poor after but maybe just maybe we had fun trying. Go on Gordon keep on cooking and entertaining the nation else Delia might return! love you Delia xxx

  128. Just to say Im looking foward to this alot and guys who say its extremely expensive... Look at it as a 3 course meal. for 4. for £30... thats £7.50 a head, £3.50 a course, and as long as you follow gordon its going to taste as good as going out! Sure its expensive if its every night, but for one night its not a huge expense... Just because its not the usual £2 for a box of dunking chicken fillets and £2 for a bag of chips doesnt mean its not worth it!

  130. Gordon - great idea! The cookalong really is a fantastic idea (I didn't see the last one) and I think it certainly will encourage a lot of people to cook, or come out of their cooking safety zones. And another plus - a free lesson from an expert that would probably run into the hundreds for the one lesson if you paid for the lesson! (I know it would cost me thousands to get toutelage from a vocal coach I greatly admire because he teaches all the stars - so I opt for his dvds and cds instead - the same stands for any line of work). I will definitely be watching on Friday, my partner probably will too as Gordon is one of the few chefs he will watch full stop. BUT All these ingredients are way too expensive to obtain all at once, and that's even considering the fact that we already have a few of the staples here already because I'm a keen cook already. I haven't got time to cost all of these ingredients individually from the 4 supermarkets within a 10 mile radius to me, but the price range for these sort of things all together assuming I could get them all, which I can't, would cost between 35-55 quid. This might not seem like a lot of money to some, but to us two in the house this is our weekly shopping budget considering I have a very specialised diet due to allergies, ad a lot of the things I need to eat are expensive anyway. Yeah if I don't have the money for the cookalong which I don't I can choose just not to join in, which I'm not because I can't, but I thought the whole point of this show was to include as many people as possible, not just those with the money to do it? Which is really not a lot of us at all, especially since the credit crunch has hit. It's all too easy to try and get us with little money to shut up by saying well just don't join in or don't watch, but this was meant to include most people not exclude us. Even if I had the money for this, as it's only for one meal, I couldn't justify spending that much for one meal. Yeah it'd be cheaper for us two, the costs would be halved but I still couldn't really justify the cost. It is cheaper than an average night out for most people but I have a restaurant near us that I can take me, my partner and friends to where we can get a very nice three course meal for less than ?30. And that's including drinks. Its not a one off place either. They're all over the country I just won't mention names on here in case I'm not allowed. We can't afford this list including the fact I have a lot of the staples already and that's just now, BEFORE my study fees start to come into play! And there's the time. 9pm, it starts. It's because Gordon swears a lot, but he could try coming on a lot earlier, maybe even as early as 7pm, and NOT swearing? It wouldn't kill him! And by the time I've cooked all of this I'll have dropped with starvation anyway, and even if I haven't done that I'll be way too tired to eat it all, if any. Cooking is MASSES of fun, but it is extremely draining, even when you're well organised and have help, which I have both of. I just don't think Gordon has though this one out well enough to cater for most people in the country. I love the man, I've got a great amount of respect for him, I've seen simple yet cheap recipes from him before, so I know he can do it. But this is why this one is such a let down. Think I'll do what others are doing and just BUY the beans and bread and eat that while watching Gordon and hopefully I'll be able to afford to join in with the next one! or at least one course, if the ingredients lists gets broken into courses next time, that is! Great idea Mr Ramsey, but think the next one through a litle better please. You could get even more people cooking just by doing this!

Can you please specify which supermarket is with you in your endeavour to get the country cooking and will offer these products at a reduced price for the week of the live cooking. 151. Gordon do you think it's possible to try and hold back on the swearing?.....My 11 year old son is just getting really interested in cooking and doing brill, so we're going to have fun doing this together, but it'd be so much better if you could set a good example.....he thinks you're cookings great, but the language a nightmare! It's hard these days to bring children up when so many values seem to have gone out of the window. Watching Hells Kitchen the other day with him the 'high-pitched bleepings' when everyone kept constantly swearing was almost giving us a headache and it completely disrupted the flow.....Please Gordon...can you try just an itsy bitsy bit? :0)

My husband and I had great fun planning it and cooking it last time that we are really looking forward to cooking together again (it's the only time I can get him in the kitchen!) Everyone should take it as a bit of fun!

We too are having friends around, but I am going to have to improvise a little, I dont like fish, my friend doesnt like cheese... but it should all add to the fun. We are really looking foward to it.

  154. As a worker in the fruit and veg industry my comment about week 1's menu is 'Rhubarb in late October? is not very seasonal is it' Alot of the general public are going to struggle to get fresh Rhubarb. A much better idea would have been A desert using Autumn fruit such as Raspberries ,Apples or Pears.

  155. no picture to post, but during last cookalong live, there was an unfortunate swap of creams while making the chocolate mousse, which in fact turned out to be a wicked success and actually tastes a lot better than the actual recipe!! Tried both, and definitely sticking to the new "mistake" recipe. Much tastier.

If you want a more affordable and every day type of meal watch river cottage autumn this will show you whats good for the season. I will give it to you there are a few things like goats cheeses, hazelnuts and walnut halves which are the only things out of the scope of every day goods.

  159. Hi, I have to say I'm really really looking forward to Friday evening, having friends round, going to give it a bash and have fantastic time while doing it! I agree with Buzz - if things are too expensive try one course or replace with something a little cheeper - I've estimated that its far cheaper than 4 of us eating out and probably going to be more fun! I too am intrigued about the baked beans - If all goes to pot at least I can serve Beans on Toast (perhaps with the goats cheese on top to make it cheesy beans!!!!) So guys if your going to be sooooo negative remember there's an off button on the telly!!!! - Nobody is forcing you to watch it!

  162. Full recipes and what they are for are at http://www.channel4.com/food/on-tv/cookalong-live/cookalong-live-the-series/week-1/menu_p_1.html - if people don't like goats cheese then a nice blue crumbly cheese would work well I reckon. What people might want to do to make the costs less is to get together with others in your Uni/Street and share some of the ingredients like walnut oil, dark rum, thyme.. If you really can't afford this menu then there are some very good sites where you can follow along with online videos - sites like http://www.bestcookvideos.com/ and http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/get_cooking/ and http://ifoods.tv/web/index.jsp - I'm sure there are plenty more to choose from and I'm sure some of them will be more credit crunch friendly. Cooking's about being creative so lets try these solutions: - If you can't get the specialist ingredients use regular ones - If you don't like something e.g. Goats cheese swap it for something you like - Use the recipes as a starting point then experiment with the ingredients to find something right for you - If the ingredients cost too much just do the courses you can afford! It's not all black and white, use your imagination!!

  177. I'm sure there are plenty of wealthy people who would like to learn to cook, but if they can afford this lot they can afford lessons. Plenty of poor people would like to cook too, and this would have been a good way to learn practical and cheep recipes, but most of them will think "he's having a laugh". Were am I going to get Lambs lettuce? Not in Asda that's for sure, and I wouldn't recognise Gevrik cheese if I slipped on it. Pity Jamie Oliver didn't come up with this idea, at least I could afford what he was cooking on his Ministry of food, and I would have enjoyed cooking along with a top chef, but I can't afford to buy this stuff on Incapacity benefit.

I think encouraging and helping people tp have the confidence to try recipes is great. Most large supermarkets like asa or morrissons will have these ingrediants and as for not being able to afford them-me and my friends (4 of us) are just divvying stuff up and getting a few items each so it actually works out fairly reasonable - (a three course meal for four people!!!)you certainly wouldnt be able to eat like this in a restaurant for cheaper. And what is it all going to be in the end? Also for how many people is it? If I just cook for 2 or 1 person, could I please half the weight of the salmon - its getting a bit expensive otherwise. Not meals made from ingredients that are flown in from third world countries where the majority of people are existing on roots. Next time youre shopping in your supermarket check out the country of origin on your produce. I live in spain and thank goodness a lot of our produce is local or at least from Spain, I don't buy anything imported. This means you have to think about and plan ahead for your menus. 201. Hi I love watching Gordon cooking. I watch all his shows. But I cant eat most of the stuff because Im a coeliac. I cant have flour, and gutten. These to items are in nearly everything excluding raw meats and veg , fish. I would love if he could cook a gutten free meal and Im sure the rest of the coeliacs would love it to. It is so hard to eat nice food. Everthing is has to be toasted like breads etc. Cakes are dry and not really nice. I cant really eat out much because of the cross contamination in the resturants.very few places will only serve me a salad. With so many people now adays being coeliacs I think they should be catered for better. Hopeful this email will not just be deleted Emily

  203. I am so looking forward to this event, and also concerned with the baked bean element (wierd). Sympathies for the people who can't afford to join in, its definitely going to be an expensive one as a side of salmon could be nearly 10 quid on its own and, contrary to what some people are saying, salmon en croute can't be "re-used later". Okay, the rest of your bags of sugar and flour can be, but they won't be the expensive ingredients. Top tip - for those people who don't keep rum in the house, you can take a container to your local pub and buy a shot, which will be sufficient for the dish. As we're a couple and this serves 4 I'm inviting friends round to share to make it worthwhile, then they can return the favour sometime, and I think some people would be able to contribute ingredients?

Dill and Lambs Lettuce - shopkeepers are amazed to be asked for such "exotic" items. And Rhubarb - in late October! Wouldn't it be a pleasant change if these food journalists and chefs came out of their big cities to the places where a great many people live in quieter (and pleasanter) places?

  215. I'd like to join in but as with so many...can't afford the outlay...which is a pity, because it's a great idea and a great way to get the nation cooking. There must be an easier/cheaper way to cook an extra special meal that doesn't include the ingredients listed. Next time can I suggest household foods, or at least inexpensive, obtainable ingredients. I like the premise but can't stretch my budget to accommodate these luxury items. good luck to you and everyone that takes part, count me in next time. As long as it's an achievable menu.

  227. I'm a student and I love cooking but I cant afford to eat like this. I would love to take part even for just one of the courses but it is hard to decipher which ingredients are for which course. The other issue i have is, I live alone and this meal will definately feed more than one person. I know you cant please everyone all the time but one program for students would be really good, or even those who live alone or a couple.

  228. For those wishing to complain at the people unable to afford this meal: GET A GRIP! At the end of the day, people can only afford what they can afford. Some ingredients can be used again of course, but the problem lies in people not having the money to buy them the first time round. Please refrain from ostracizing those who cannot afford to join in, to be honest it's pathetic. That said, I find it even more pathetic that the majority of the people signing up can't cook! It's a life skill, and I find it shocking that people in their middle ages are having to be tough via the medium of television. I will concede however that not all of you lovely people are in that category, as I'm sure a lot of you are there for the fun! I'd say the bottom line is that some people just cannot afford this menu! Have heart my lovelies as there will be a budget menu in the cookalong series!

  237. In response to all those who are moaning about the cost of the ingredients, You are basing your gripes upon the assumption that you will only use these ingredients once. However if you think about the aim of this program ie. to encourage people to cook at home, then you will realise that most of these ingredients will last for more than one meal. If you take that into account then you should realise the recipe is not actually particularly expensive. Thank you and peace out me breadrins

  238. Some of you people really do wind me up! Your talking about cost yet you really should have a lot of these ingredients already in your cupboards/fridge. Cost wise it would be no more than cooking any other 3 course meal. Just because its has clotted cream and salmon it doesnt mean its extravagant. Salmon is actually one of the cheaper fish available!! Price this up per head and i think you would be surprised. Concider that you wont be using all the oil and a lot of other bits. I dont like seafood - Salmon is NOT seafood. Its fish... a freshwater (sometimes brackish) fish. Seafood is saltwarer. We want proper home cooked food! - I suggest you get yourself back down the chippie then! This is proper home cooked food! Gordon is proving that by showing you it LIVE!!! If I can do it then you can do it as well. Take some time to cook and you will find its not a chore but an artform. How many will this feed? - A minimum of 4. Last time Chris Moyles did it for 10 if i remember correctly. What sized baked beans? - A standard 320grm tin should do. Finally, bare in mind that this menu may not be for a run of the mill family meal but could be an entertaining menu. If anyone saw gordon on Jonathon Ross last night he said each week will be themed. People, stop moaning and just enjoy it. If this weeks doesnt take your fancy, noone is putting a gun to your head. Dont do this week and see what happens next week! I for one will NOT be doing this weeks... but i'll try out the recipe on the sunday! Watch enjoy and for god sake get cooking! To answer a few questions... Can you use anything else other than salmon? - Not really... not with this recipe. You could adapt it to use chicken but i'd imagine it would be pretty dry. You would be best to experiment outside of this cookalong to get it right. If you want to use beef then its pretty much a beef wellington although you would again need to adjust some other ingredients. Why is it shown at 9pm? - The F word... and i dont mean gordons other series.

My respect for Gordon Ramsey as a chef has took a severe downturn the majority of families this day in age cant afford ingredients like that on top of their regular food shop! I took part in the last cookalong and it cost me a fortune - scallops and steak ARE gorgeous but I could have gone out for a good cooked meal and not had any of the hassle cooking or washing up afterwards. 294. With reference to Donna Harrison's post. I too have to use wheat free diet and using wheat free flour should be fine. I tend to favour using Dove's Gluten free plain white flour. For crumble toppings I have never seemed to have too much of a problem with, make sure you rub the flour and butter together first before adding the sugar. You say you avoid gluten, does this includes oats? As I am ok with oats I tend to add some of them to the crumble mixture to add the crunch that can sometimes be lacking in wheat free things. Hope this helps. Sorry if it doesn't tell you anything new! Let me know if someone offers you alternative advice as it would be useful to know.

  296. We want to take part on the cookalong on the 24th Oct but could you maybe advise me as I have to stick to a gluten free diet would I just substitute the plain flour with my gluten free plain flour with the same quantity or would I need to add more liquid for the salmon en croute. Also can you advise me with the crumble aswell as I have tried to make a crumble before with my gluten free flour but it did not turn out very well. thanks

  298. Liked the last cookalong but the ingrediants seem a little expensive for this one.

  303. I think that there are to many ingrediants on the recipe and that the food is not at all suitable for a family who want to cook for their family next time famiuly friendly menues with less ingrediants to buy I am very dissapointed
