Wannabe ballerina, Jayne Laverick, plans to give her guests a taste of the finer things in life on Come Dine With Me Teesside

28 year old mum of two, Jayne, claims to be a foodie but not a food snob - something rival host, Wayne, is keen to dispute. He's been teasing Jayne all week about her penchant for posh restaurants and isn't about to let up tonight. "I'm going to be super-critical," he says.

Jayne's efforts to convince her sceptics that she's a regular, coupon-cutting mum aren't helped by her glamorous menu, which includes wasabi caviar and, ahem, real gold.

The delicately crafted creations might look worthy of a Michelin star but Michelle's not easily impressed. "The type of food I hate is fancy, posh, little food," she exclaims. As for what she thinks of caviar: "The texture is really, really gippin'".

Back at the table, Wayne is using his radio skills to probe the diners. "Who do you think wants to win the Come Dine With Me experience?" he asks. "You, for the publicity," says a bluntly honest Michelle. Wayne might be hurt but he doesn't show it; instead he focuses his attention on scrapping with Jayne, who escapes to the kitchen, close to tears.

Starter

scallops

Jayne goes to town with her tomato tian with basil ice cream before serving scallops with cauliflower puree and wasabi caviar.

Main course

Saddle of venison with sweet potato

In a meal worthy of a Michelin star, Jayne serves up saddle of venison with sweet potato and celeriac gateau, wild mushroom jus and seasonal green vegetables.

Dessert

banoffee pie

Jayne's guests credit crunched their way through a deconstructed banoffee pie with gold.

  1. I watch "Come Dine with Me%u201D regularly and have just seen the episode with one of the best cooks the show has presented, i.e. the one with Jayne Laverick. I don’t know when this show was screened in the UK, but it has only recently been screened in Australia. This is the first time that I’ve written a comment about any of the shows and the first time I downloaded a menu, i.e. Jayne’s. Jayne was robbed! She was by far the best %u2013 not even in the same league as the other three dead palettes that, if the truth is known, only seemed to have a taste for chips and gravy. If I was one the guests at your dinner party Jayne, I would have given you a score of eleven. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Kindest regards, Ken Campbell

  2. Dear Jayne, I saw your episode on the 13/10/09 in Sydney. My heart went out to you because you produced a stunning and creative menu and clearly went to a lot of effort to produce a dining experience for your guests. Your food looked amazing and clearly you were head and shoulders above the competition. It was a shame that you were placed in the company of ignorant people who criticised you in your own home because they simply could not understand your passion and felt threatened by your knowlege and experience. I congratulate you on the way you conducted yourself and I know that you will succeed. Please don't give up.

  3. Dear Jane, I have just watched the program 12 Oct 2009 here down under where the weather is 'Beautiful one day and Perfect the next' north of Sydney. I thought you all through the four parties and in particular at your own were treated most unfairly by your so called 'Guests'. Indeed you had the right approach to marketing food with the words you chose, just like all of the fine chefs in the world. The courses that you served were to the eye first class and the contents were mouth watering. Watching such a program the viewer cannot enjoy the taste but I am sure it would be exquisitley enjoyable. You were a class host way above your guests and your presntation of yourself and your home was consistent with your outlook on fine dining. The viewing audience are in my opinion looking to see fine dining and as such this does not come cheap nor should it. My heart went out to you on how you felt at the moment they announced the results - very unfair. In this regard, you conducted yourself in the most appropriate manner. Keep up your good standards in living (including cooking) throughout the rest of your life. Ron

  4. I also love eating good food, saving to eat at fabulous restaurants and even travelling to other countries to do so. Jayne, your competitors were plain jealous! My friends and colleagues seem to enjoy my tales of food/ wine/ hotels and some ask for recommendations. Enjoy what you do and ignore the ignorant

  5. I just couldn't believe it when Jayne didnt win. I thought that her menu was clearly the winning menu. I thought that her dishes sounded beautiful and the presentation was just magnificant. I especially loved how she decorated her dessert, with the "gold leaf", i thought it was creative and i thought it was wise to have added a bit of glamour into the evening. She really was an excllent host and all her dishes were beautifully prepared. I think that it was just a shame that the other diner's didnt appreciate Jayne or her sophisticated pallet. Like others that have commented on this i would also love to have a chance to talk to Jayne about the experiences she has had with food and all the beautiful dishes she has tasted. I thought it was horrible how one certain guest treated her and even reduced her to tears! Jealousy isn't a nice thing. I hope that one day Jayne does open up her bistro, i know that i for one would love to dine out there.

  6. Jayne, you were the clear winner on that show... jealousy is a strange thing. What is wrong with a little glamour... do they not realise you go on this programme to do the best you can. As much as I loved the sound and look of your menu, I must say, I loved your black and white dress even more... I have a ball to go to soon and would love if someone could advise me of where the dress was from...just wish we were getting gold leaf on our food there. You go girl!!!

  7. It just shows how strongly I feel, that I have found the site on the internet and posted a comment! I watched the show last week and have been seething about it ever since. Jayne - your food was amazing, the most inspired I have seen on the shows and I really take my hat off to you. I just wish I had enjoyed your hospitality rather than Wayne the fool. Keep up the fantastic cooking.

  8. I thought Jayne's menu was a winning one! I would LOVE to have been round that table to taste her food. I, like Jayne, would save up to be able to go to really great places to eat - sadly I cannot afford to do it right now, but I would really like to sit down and listen to her about all the great restaurants she has eaten at and what she's eaten. I think the other contestents were alittle narrow minded and possibly jealous.

  9. Like many others I've never commented on one of these things before but just wanted to say that Jane your meal was amazing! The others were ignorant and couldn't appreciate that this was probably the best meal they will ever eat in their life. Can't believe they criticised you for wanting to cook them a special meal. Outraged!

  10. I'm with Tim,you've hit the nail on the head. You only had to see Wayne's hilarious fake emotional response to "Leaving on a jet plane", to see that he fancied Jayne. And why not, she's a class act, stunning, gracious and an excellent chef. Why wouldn't you want your guests to have great food, it's a dinner party for goodness sakes? It made great TV to put insecure, uneduacated people with someone with manners and ability. I'm only sorry that she was got upset in the kitchen. You're certainly famous now Wayne, - but not for being a nice guy that's for sure. Well done Jayne, you won the contest and now you win again. Keep shrugging off jealous people, you're bound to meet loads of them I afraid!!!

  11. Like others I've not felt compelled to leave messages on similar boards, but I am glad to see the messages of support for Jayne. It was reverse snobbery at its best. I cannot believe that the menu on the wall caused such a stir. Jayne is passionate about food, so she has a menu on her wall. If you were passionate about art or photography, you'd have that on the wall, what is the difference? Its also quite sad that people posting some messages think that supportive messages for Jayne must be contrived. I've never met Jayne, living in a town more than 300 miles away from Teeside, but I felt compelled to show support and evidently others feel the same. What is amusing is when Wayne couldn't pronounce jus... I am sorry but you're entering a cooking competition - a jus accompaniment is pretty basic - and not just because thats what restaurants like the Fat Duck serves, but if you're at all interested in food, shows like Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen woul teach you that. I would have thoroughly enjoyed being Jayne's guest.

  12. Jane you are gorgeous honey, Im very happy to see all this support for you after you were bullied like that in your home, it was almost like a confederacy of idiots against you. You reacted with grace and elegance and I was very impressed with you all the way through. You were a great hostess with super taste and and a wonderful manner, serving very good food. All the best for the future.

  14. Jayne - I don't know you and certainly never usually log onto websites to comment on TV programmes but I felt compelled to after seeing the latest episode of 'Come Dine with Me'. What a shame that your fantastic menu was wasted on such rude, ungrateful nincompoops. Had I been a guest at your dinner party I would have felt very special and spoilt at being served such lovely food that you had obviously spent a lot of time and effort preparing. You were the epitome of elegance, sophistication and good taste - the Louis Roederer Cristal amongst the Asti Spumante.

  15. Wayne behaved like a bully. I wanted to be there to put him in his place. If I were Jayne I would have asked him to leave after the first bout rude and totally unjustifiable critiscism. He's the sort of person who tries to play to the majority to isolate the one person who was clearly the best. He spoke in cliches (all that contrived rubbish about Jayne being Cava not Champagne) I think that he fancied her but being a coward was unable to say it, and so resorted to horrible childish attacks. I also think that the other two were almost no better. The so called "nice bloke" who joined in the stupid questioning as to why Jayne felt the need to produce good food. He wasn't nice at all. And as for the woman from the cotton mill, well say no more - rude and totally common. She was GIPPING not the food!! Anyway Wayne, if you're reading this please take some time to watch yourself on the programme again. Believe me you are no gentleman (as you made reference to being with the half hearted apology) you're a smashie and nicey caracature, a cliche, that's all. Well done Jayne - you won this hands down me dear!!!

  16. I love this programme, and I agree with everyone else on this board, that Jayne was treated very unfairly. She was gracious to everyone, gave thoughtful comments and was a perfect host. She is right, she was holding a dinner party and the idea is not to cook something that you cook every night for your kids. I feel if she had been on with another set of guests, she would have scored better and been more appreciated.

  20. Jane's menu was superb and certainly coming 1st or second would have been right. she was robbed by those plebs. Honestly if they thought some cheap meat balls and a jaffa cake biscuit dessert was better than her dessert - the fools. Jane rated everyone fairly and was nice to them all. That radio DJ was incredibly jealous of her. I think he wanted Jane's lifestyle but was a waanabe. Jane was superb and i would glady relish the opportunity of having dinner at her place. It paid off being so gracious to your guests, despite their rudeness. They showed themselves to be lacking in manners. I believe you made W feel insecure, he was pathetic and childish. He should be ashamed. Your behaviour was incredible given how rude he was to you in your own home. He was fortunate you never showed him the door. Well done to you.

  26. I've only just watched this episode of come dine with on More 4, and i believe, without a doubt, that Jayne should have won...hands down! Let me start by saying, that i don't eat in posh restaurants and i don't eat posh food. Jayne's menu was exciting, new and exploratory. She achieved an exciting menu, which i believe was one of the best I've seen on 'Come dine with me'. I think the criticism and attack she received from the other "wana be" cooks, was totally undeserved. How she chooses to create her menu if of her choice, at the end of the day how many opportunities does a food lover get to perform as they did, and she took advantage of that, as she should! I believe the only reason Wayne had so much to say and criticize is because he was jealous of her ability to see and create dishes in her own unique way that he could never achieve. If he could only sample her menu with an open mind i believe he would have enjoyed it immensely. I think it is quite sad that his opinion was so clouded by his jealously of her talent, that he found it so hard to enjoy such a creative menu, but instead he felt a need to criticize every single course, and not only stop there, but use a pathetic game of the guests being "interviewed" in order to scrutinize her even more...if she wants to use wassabi caviar and 24carot gold leaf on her menu let her!!! That's the point of the show! To do the best you can! To aim to win! In closing, well done Jayne! Its unfortunate you were unable to share your menu with people who deserved it, but don't see their comments as true reflections of your food, they weren't, they were opinions of people who don't know how to open their minds to new food! Keep cooking!

  29. Why shouldn't a mother of two be able to afford a meal at The Fat Duck or a dinner at Claridges? On another channel a family with three children were shown to be FAR more extravagant by buying ready meals and getting take-aways every day of the week (thus spending nearly ?900 a month just on food), yet this is supposed to be a typical family struggling with the Credit Crunch! Well done, Jayne! A taste for fine dining seems a much more frugal and worthwhile habit than 20 cigarettes a day. I probably would have asked you why the wasabi caviar was so luminously green (natural wasabi is quite pale in colour) but I really appreciated your efforts to introduce new flavours and ingredients to your guests (and by extension to those of us watching). Thank you!

  31. I am so sick of this show featuring people who cannot cook! This used to be a programme that showcased enthusiastic amateur gourmandes, now it's descended to little more than a Chimps' Tea Party. I know Wayne personally and even I thought his behaviour towards Jayne was disgraceful, bordering on bullying. Why should she have to apologise for her lifestyle and tastes just to placate her fellow diners' reverse snobbery? Although it is highly commendable that Michelle managed to get her veg from an allotment, thus proving her point that you don't have to spend a fortune for decent food, contestants are given a pretty hefty budget to spend on ingredients and are out to impress - that's the whole point of COMPETITION! Voting someone down for 'trying too hard' with their food rather defeats the object, I'm afraid. Kudos to Jayne for her graceful handling of what looked like a pretty nasty few nights for her.

  34. I just watched the program online on More4 catchup. Looking at all the comments below it would appear the majority are from jane's friends or associates. Predictable but to be fair, I would have expected the same also had I appeared on the program. Having no prior knowledge of the lady in question, i have to say her delivery was good to fair, however jane's kitchen woudl have benefitted from some tiles/splashback/upstand around the worktop. Her story did not ring true with me, a single mum, with kids, collecting tokens, and serving gold for dessert ? Then to top matters off, havign a menu framed on the wall. One begs the question whether this was done purely for the benefit of the show. I am sure jane is very nice to her friends, however, it was clear she desperately seeks publicity. I found the program a little awkward to watch, and i felt sorry for the girl. Still, wholely entertaining to watch. May i suggest a trip to Ikea to finish off your kitchen jane !

  37. Well, seeign as everyone else is repeating their posts, perhaps I shoudl too. I always say with these reality shows that the true personality comes through eventually, and I believe that on this occasion the veil slipped. Perhaps Jayne may well have cooked the more lavish meal, however it goes to show that you don't have to spend a fortune to make a memorable meal. Jayne believed that by spending a fortune she could impress. I do not beleive for one minute that she was all the things she claimed to be, and by name dropping constantly about Madonna and the Fat Duck, it goes to show that clearly the only things that matter to the woman are the things with a steep price tag. I think her true colour came through as the show progressed and I applaud the producer for beign abel to weed out the real cooks and entertainers from the "wannabe" tv guests, hoping for publicity. I suspect wherever Jayne is from, there are few people who see her in a different light now.

Her passion and enthusiasm for one of the best pleasures in life was wonderful. I can't believe the manners of the gagging single mum! She behaved like a badly brought up 10 year old. 43. I've never commented on a programme before but I felt compelled to add my opinion after watching Come Dine With Me last night. The programme makers tried to make Jayne look boastful and pretentious but it soon became clear that she was just very honest and open. Maybe too honest. It obviously never crossed her mind that the other three would not be as obsessed with food as she was. I dont think she purposely set out to make them jealous or uncomfortable. I think that rather than being an avaricious money-grabbing accountant (as she was painted as at the beginning) that she's actually a lovely person and this became patently clear by the end of the programme. Can you imagine any of the other contestants showing as much grace as she did when told that they couldn't remember her meal as they were too drunk. This is after she spent a great deal of time putting together something that was quite honestly way above the usual 'Come Dine With Me' fare. I was horrified that she came last. Shame on you to the others. By the end of the programme I was completely won over by her charm and enthusiasm. Channel 4- Get this lady a programme of her own!

The most professional and best presented dishes so far in the series, jayne coming last proves to me that its not just about food, not just about hosting, but also about tactical scoring, obviously people are going to give low scores to the person they see as their fiercest competition,I thought Jayne certainly deserved to win, its a shame others were so intimidated.

  47. Clearly it wasn't all about the food. Making people feel comfortable and welcome is equally important. Yes, Jayne's meal was better than the rest, but her smug attitude was certainly off-putting if amusing - or should that be 'amuse bouche'! For a start, her menu was tactically misguided. She must have known that it was going to alienate rather than entice the other contestants. Because of this, she came across as patronising in her desire to 'educate' the 'lower classes' on matters culinary. The look on her face at the end was truly priceless! Well, what can one say about someone who puts a menu on their wall.

  49. Barbara, amuse bouche is a french word, literally "mouth amuser". Its a little bite of flavour, a small morsel you get at some restaurants to get your taste buds tingling for your starter. At home a shot glass of an unusual tasty soup like butternut is my preference for an amuse bouche, but there are many beautifully presented ideas online and in books. I would have loved to enjoy both Jayne's food and her company. I'm glad to see from the comments so many others feel the same.

  51. I am delighted so many people have written in suppoort of JAyne, The last comment suggests Jane has written all her comments herself. I live in Scotland , have never met JAyne, but echo the sentimentes of others, she was a great cook, should have won, was dignified, and merits a show of her own! channel 4 are you listening?

  53. Jayne should have won by a mile! Her menu was imaginative, her food was superbly cooked and tastefully presented and her dinner party was by far the best. It would have been a privilege to be there. She is also gorgeous. Envy should never be a motivation in the voting but it was plainly the case here.

  54. Jayne, I thought you showed great dignity on the show. Your food was 10 times better than the rest of them, and it was painfully obvious how intimidated that stereotypical local DJ was by your cooking ability and sheer interest in food. The comments above appear to suggest that the public are on your side, so you can hold your head up high. And yes, give Masterchef a go - you would knock 'em dead! Best wishes.

  55. Likewise I have also never felt the need to write to a program before. I was appalled at the behavior of the other 3 contestants towards Jane. How rude they were to come to her home, except her hospitality and then criticize her at every turn! I would have shown them the door after the first course. As for the dear Wayne and his little so called %u201Cgame%u201D that was an excuse to have a go at her, and he knew it!! They all cheated Jane in my opinion with bully boy tactics and they should be ashamed of themselves. So what! that she’s passionate about food. Some people have photo’s of expensive holiday snaps on their wall she had a menu, so what! People shouldn’t be criticized over their passion. Jane you displayed dignity by congratulation Wayne, although he accused you of not doing so, you held your head high under extreme %u201Cganging up%u201D mob like attitudes. Disgusting!!

  58. I'm glad to see so many other people felt the same as I did, in that Jayne was treated so very unfairly. I would gladly invite Jayne to dinner anytime, and I like others think Jayne should try Master Chef. I believe in the law of 3, so I wouldn't want to be in Wayne's shoes.

  59. This is the first time i have responded to a programme. I think Jayne was an excellent host and the food looked amazing, i am a big foody myself and find it disgusting how she was spoken to in the manner in her own home after cooking some lovely food!! i live in the north east and felt embarrased by the other contestants reaction to some fantastic food on offer.

  60. What a waste, Jayne should be down here in the South of England, she should have a TV slot, clearly a very cultured girl, bags of talent when it comes to food and boy does she look good. Come on TV Executives, we are crying out for a woman this good to appear on TV

  62. I never write on these things but I was so outraged by the tasteless guests on this episode that I feel the need to add a comment. Jayne's menu was fabulous; she added fun and unique elements to dining that I am sure the other guests will remember and talk about for some time to come. She deserved to win. Guests gave her a low score due to jealousy. Definately try Masterchef, your passion is inspirational.

  63. I thought Wayne was really bad in the way he treated Jayne, it was very clear that she entered totally into the spirit of the show, her only mistake was probably coming off like too much of a food snob and assuming that the others were as interested in food as she obviously is, whereas Wayne was showing more of "look at me " i'm a DJ i can afford anything i want. She certainly did not deserve to come last. and Wayne did not deserve to win.

  65. I completely agree with the other comments here about Jane's menu and conduct on the show - she was fantastic! she deserved to win for sure. she genuinely loves food her menu was well thought out and beautifully presented. she was honest and gracious through out and i think it is terrbile that those other guests couldn't see past the chips on their shoulders to award her first or second place as she deserved.

  68. Perhaps Jayne's menu was "wannabe" but she is absolutely fabulous and without a doubt the real thing! A genuine passionate fun foodie. It's pathetic that two guests felt compelled to cut her down to size to satisfy their ego and class inadequacies. Jayne was an utterly charming hostess, a lively well mannered guest, and it would seem a talented cook. Despite the unsavoury tricks of other two, Jayne stole the show.

  69. Jayne Laverick's menu was appealing, well balanced and certainly more thought-provoking than the other menus of this evenings show. The idea of giving people new tastes and combinations to try, is to be admired and is not at all "snobbish" or "pretentious". We should all, from time to time, try something new, widening our range of tastes. I was horrified byt the reaction, attitude and behaviour of Wayne, showing that he nothing of a gentleman. Michelle was extremely rude and of bad taste. Who in their right, decent mind would get drunk on such a show? I hope that Jayne will continue with her love of cooking and bring new experiences to others. Regards Ian

  70. I watched the show with 3 friends last night - we were all gobsmacked by how rude Jayne's guests were to her. It was obvious who should have won - but like in "the weakest link" they vote out the strongest player at the end. Jayne you should have thrown them out and let the camera crew enjoy and appreciate your efforts!

  72. I think Jayne has natural style and flair in and out of the kitchen. Why should she tone down just to accommodate the other contestants. She is eloquent and clearly passionate about food yet was gracious when embarrassed in her own home. It was obvious who should have won...not the insecure small time DJ with a the bullying gameplan.

  73. What a pity your guests weren't open minded enough to appreciate what you were trying to show and the effort you went to. Still, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear..... Your food was clearly the best, but a couple of your guests were quite mean spirited in their scoring. Never mind - there are lots of people who would love to have been treated to this fabulous menu

  75. I'm sorry but there was fault on all sides. Jayne's food was fab but she spent the week telling the rest of them their tastes weren't as good as her and restaurant/ shop name dropping as much as possible. Yes the others were rude to her and I'm not excusing that, but she almost seemed to out to make sure they knew she was educating them and not entertaining them so I'm not surprised they were so uncomfortable they marked her down. The food is only part of the evening. She really needs to appreciate company and not expect everybody to admire her constant preaching.

  77. I think Jayne produced lovely looking food, and there's nothing wrong with having good taste, and liking the best in life. However, it's in very poor taste to immediately start going OTT in displaying your superiority to the others like she did, name dropping and acting above her station. I go to michelin star restaurants a lot, but if I was doing CDWM with people who clearly don't "even a local radio DJ" .... I would be more humble, rather than trying to force my superiority upon them, like she so tackily did. I think she was rude, insecure, pretentious and incredibly lacking in social skills

  79. This show was real eye-opener its funny how every time you hear the accusation 'pretentious' it invariably is misused as here - moreover, and isn't this usually the case, it is clear the accusers are the self-important and affected. Ms Laverick your food was honest and displayed your real passion for food - and you won by a mile in the hearts of all those who watched. Well done!
