Barry Davis from Come Dine With Me Ipswich works in insurance so he used to making tall claims. "I'm very confident, quietly confident, very confident, quietly confident," he stutters unconvincingly. Let's hope he's surer of himself in the kitchen

But it seems Barry does like a drink and after tucking them away quite tidily at last night's dinner he's not feeling on top form as he walks round the grocers. In fact it's just all too much for him. He pops into a beauty parlour for a bit of pampering. What a man.

Halfway through his preparation Barry realises he's forgotten his onion and has to pop to the shops on his bike. But he's barely been back 5 minutes before he realises he's forgotten the spring onion for the salad as well. Never mind, just use a leek. "It's like a brother or a cousin," he reassures us. Right. Unfortunately he's also forgotten the stock, the stirrers and the parsley.

The guests are here and am dram enthusiast, Angie, is in buoyant mood: "I've missed you," she tells a bemused Barry as she rushes through the door. After plying them with cocktails it's time to serve and talk soon turns to look-a-likes. "You're a bit like a slimmer version of Fern Britton," Angie tells the curvaceous Zoe. It doesn't go down well. And neither does the raw leek salad, surprisingly.

Has Barry's chilled out approach left his guests cold?

Starter

Peggy's parsnip soup.

Barry greeted his guests with White Russians before serving a starter inspired by his grandma - Peggy's parsnip soup.

Main Course

Beef goulash

Barry served beef goulash and paprika dumplings for his main course with beetroot and red cabbage salad. Unfortunately we can't bring you Barry's goulash for copyright reasons but for a similar dish try this pork goulash recipe instead.

Dessert

Chocolate risotto

To finish Barry served a delicious pud of chocolate and orange risotto. Unfortunately we can't bring you Barry's dessert for copyright reasons but for a similar dish try this chocolate and orange tiramisu instead.

  7. After last week's excellent programmes, this week's guests seem really boring. I was always taught that it is polite to take a gift when going to someone else's house of a meal.
