Tonight it’s Nikki O’Leary’s turn to have a shot at the £1000 prize in Liverpool – but it’s not going to be easy because she’s planning to serve a three course vegan meal to four meat loving food connoisseurs.

And Nikki has also set herself an extra challenge, not only is she after that first prize, but she’s determined to convert her guests to the vegan lifestyle. Her diners are sceptical, so she’s going to have to work hard to win them over.

Nikki seems to be on to a winner when wine-buff Terry pronounces the vegan bacon as good as the real thing and fish-monger Dan asks for third helpings of her aubergine curry.

But with no meat on the menu, has Nikki done enough to reach that top spot?

Starter

Baked avocado on a bed of asparagus with vegan bacon

Baked Avocado On A Bed Of Asparagus With Vegan Bacon
This vegan bacon was announced to be as good as the real thing, and Nikki knows it!

Main Course

Mashed aubergine and spinach curry

Mashed Aubergine And Spinach Curry With Quinoa And Chapatti Bread
This fancy vegan curry from Nikki is a triumph.

Dessert

Vegan chocolate mousse

Vegan Chocolate Mousse
Nikki cracked out a classic, with a vegan twist.

  2. Dear Nikki We follow a vegan diet and i thought that you might like to know that the Green & Black's Organic Maya gold chocolate is not suitable for vegans as it has organic whole milk powder in the ingredients even though it is a dark chocolate - please see details below copied from Green & Black's website. I know this as I have studied the ingredients of many different types of chocolate bars - a lot of the dark chocolates have milk or butter solids in and some even egg white! However, Hotel Chocolat are one of the few who cater for vegans so maybe you could amend your recipe to use one of these so that it is suitable for a vegan diet. Sue Green & Black's Organic Maya Gold Chocolate 100g Fairtrade dark chocolate with spices and a twist of orange. Product Details - Ingredients: Organic cocoa mass, organic raw cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, emulsifier: soya lecithin, natural fruit and spice extracts (0.1%), organic vanilla extract, organic whole milk powder. 55% cocoa and 45% sugar are traded in accordance with international fairtrade standards. Minimum cocoa solids 55%

  3. I've been vegan for 3 weeks now snce I moved to uni and it is SERIOUSLY easy. The only time I have difficulty sticking to it is when I'm eating out because nowhere allows for us! If anyone who's reading these comments like's the idea but thinks veganism is hard, trust me: it isn't. It's so simple. I'm feeling healthier and proud of myself and it's kind of fun too! GIVE IT A GO ;] xx

  5. I can honestly say if I was served this menu I would have scored it a 1, not because it wasn't good but because it not only had no meat but it had horrible 'faux meat' in the starter! I've always thought it very unfair on 'Come Dine with Me' that all the other contestants are put under pressure to produce a vegetarian meal on top of the meal for everyone else, especially when vegetarian cooking is not their talent and they end up getting low marks from the problem guest for their efforts! It's not like the veggie has to cook meat for their omnivorous guests! Alternatively, I would claim an allergy to chlorophyll to even things out a little!

  14. Katy, you took the words right out of my mouth! I too was inspired to discover more about Vegan food after seeing Nikki's cooking. GO NICKI! I think Nicki's done a fantastic job, showing that vegans are not all stereotypical. I'm now Vegan for threeweeks and found the switch suprisingly easy.

  18. Fantastic ideas thanks, as a life long meat eater i am in a small panic having decided to host a dinner party for a vegan friend - now i think i can cope (and not miss the meat part i usually think of as so important in a meal). Cheers

  19. Dear Nikki, I think you did an excellent job of showing people that vegans can be normal, lovely people who eat tasty food! You have also made me rethink my own philosophy. I've been a vegetarian for 20 years and felt comfortable believing that I was 'doing my bit'. However, I have been ignoring many facts surrounding milk production etc and am going to shop with more consideration. With soya milk, substitute meat products now so good and available, it shouldn't be so difficult. Thank you for the reminder and for raising awareness. Katy
