It’s the penultimate dinner party in Cardiff. Last night ex-merchant seaman Jim Blythe sailed into the lead with a gastronomic tour of the South Seas but his dinner party hit stormy waters when tempers flared between Annette and Jane. Tonight’s host socialist and postman Charlie Balch hopes that his organic food will stamp out any bad feeling.
For host Charlie, it’s important that all his ingredients are not only fresh and organic but sourced as close to home as possible. But for his slow-roasted mutton main course, Charlie has to drive cross-country to a specialist butchers. Charlie was a vegetarian until three years ago, now he’s eating meat again - but only if it’s organic and from Wales. Will his guests be able to tell the difference?
For his apple and almond crumble, Charlie chooses to use dessert apples rather than cooking apples and he doesn’t bother to weigh a single ingredient for his crumble. Can Charlie’s maverick attitude still win him that cash prize?
