The last time Christopher Biggins was on our TV screens tucking into a meal, it was on I’m a Celebrity and the food consisted of witchetty grubs, crocodile feet and kangaroo testicles. That sounds bad but was he prepared for Come Dine With Me?
No, I didn’t really. My big thing was to make something where I didn’t have to be in the kitchen all the time. I wanted to actually be at the dining table talking to my friends. For me, a dinner party consists of three things; first of all the people, secondly the ambience the host creates, and thirdly the food. It was that sort of thing that I went for.
I did a smoked trout mousse to start with, and I did my great auntie Vi's trifle.
I love it, I'm addicted to it. That's why I agreed to do it. I'm addicted to it mainly because of the man who does the voice over, who I think is absolutely brilliant! And I know I've given him a lot of fodder to use on me. He'll be outrageous, I'm sure.
It was rumoured Edwina Currie was one of them, but I certainly didn't know Julia Bradbury or Philip Olivier were the other two. They've become really good friends, Julia and Philip. I spoke to Philip a few minutes ago. He's gorgeous. We had such a good time. Mainly, I think, because Julia got us drunk on the first night. So drunk, in fact, that I, having not been ill from alcohol for 30 years, went home and was violently ill.
Yes, but I was lucky. Philip had to cook the following day, and he was totally wasted. How he cooked I’ll never, ever know, it was a miracle. And it was actually very delicious.
It was exhausting. And also having to film during the day about what you thought of the previous night, and what you’re thinking about what’s coming up, it’s all a very heavy schedule, and if I’d known, I wouldn’t have done it at that particular juncture, so soon after the panto season, because I was exhausted. But I’m very pleased I did, because I’ve made two very good friends, and it was good fun.
Nobody served bad food. I suppose each night there was something I would have done differently. Julia’s chocolate pudding was far too sweet for me. Phil’s main course was a whole fish, with bones and the head and the tail, and I don’t like that, I’m a fillet man. And Edwina had cooked Beef Wellington which I didn’t think was that good.
No, nothing! Not by a long chalk.
My ideal dinner party would be David Beckham - on his own - and who else? Let me think. Elizabeth Taylor. Me, and her majesty the queen.
And more!
