First step to a successful tasting is 'nosing'. This means getting a sniff in. You'll need to wake up your nose to fully appreciate the different flavours in the whisky.
Pick up the glass with your left hand. Split the fingers of your right hand into a big 'V' with two fingers either side (like a Vulcan 'live long and prosper' greeting.)
Pop the stem of the glass in the gap between your fingers and cover the neck with the palm of your left hand. Shake the glass with a nice, even swirl to stir up the whisky. This lets the heat of your hand warm the liquor and releases the flavour compounds in the whisky.
