Over the next four weeks Turkeywatch will give an update on turkey information from farms and suppliers nationwide. By Anna Jean Hughes

Steve Merritt & Juliet Fay with their 3 young children have created SJ Organics (www.sjorganics.co.uk), a small scale organic poultry enterprise at Llywncrychyddod Farm in Wales, which distributes its food through Face of Flowers, www.face-of-flowers-organic.co.uk

1. What's this year's price?

10.90 per kg

2. Has bird flu or affected the price of your birds?

We decided on the price early on in the year and bird flu has had no discernable effect on our prices.

3. Have the escalating grain prices affected the cost of your birds and how do you think prices will fare in the coming weeks?

The biggest effect on price has been the increasing cost of organic rations. Grain prices have gone up 40% which has led to an increase of Organic birds of up to 20%. There was half a tonne per acre less of grain and no alternative food source by which to subsidise the turkey’s diet.

4. Has there been a rush to buy turkeys this year?

As yet there has been no discernable impact on people's buying and no rush on turkeys as a result of the avian flu rumours or limitations brought on by grain prices. However, the independent organic stockpile quickly runs out and consumers will then face the supermarket scrum for long-frozen, poor-quality birds at an outrageous mark-up price.

5. In your opinion, how do organic and non-organic turkeys compare?

Supermarket birds don't compare with organic and proper free range birds; they are a mass produced, factory process which reduces the birds to the lowest common denominator of welfare, taste and cost. We do bone and roll a few turkeys but most people just want an oven ready bird.
