Over the next four weeks Turkeywatch will give an update on turkey information from farms and suppliers nationwide. By Anna Jean Hughes
At the first whiff of a media panic over turkey supplies over Christmas, we are launching Turkeywatch – 4Food will bring you regular updates on the price and availability of the birds as well as the options for alternative Christmas meats out there, from boar to venison.
4Food scours the country to determine the various affects of increased cereal prices, avian flu, organic farming and conscientious buying upon price and supply of the birds. One butcher claimed that the price of poultry in general, not just that of turkey, had increased as much as 15% due to cumulative problems within poultry farming.
The current statement from the Traditional Turkey Farmwatch Association (TTFA - www.golden-promise.co.uk) on bird flu is that "we've organised special seminars to provide our members with top-level advice on the biosecurity measures needed to protect poultry, and I know they've taken this very seriously, as indeed our strict code of practice requires. The advice from the independent Food Standards Agency is that British turkey is safe to eat. You cannot catch bird flu from eating cooked turkey or any other poultry meat."
