Restaurateur Oliver Peyton knows a thing or two about well-made British cooking, and his bakery demonstrates no less verve and imagination. The pretty-looking festive fairy cakes are made with sponge filled with candied fruit and topped with berry or vanilla icing, and decorated with green or red stars. The individually priced cakes are appropriately wrapped in a candy coloured box or tin for no additional cost.

Produced in Northern Italy using a combination of traditional and modern methods, these marrons are widely regarded as the best in Italy. Sourced from hills close to Naples, the marrons are left in great tubs of water and glacéed without the use of chemicals.
Air dried in caves, they are coated in cane sugar syrup and lightly flavoured with vanilla for a soft and delicate finish.

Former Blur bassist Alex James seems to be doing quite well as a farmer these days, even having brought out his own cheese, now available at Selfridges and other selected quality stores. With some assistance from a champion cheese-maker, James has developed the fresh goats cheese with cider brandy and wrapped it in chestnut leaves for that extra mouldy flavour.

Tim d'Offay’s treasure trove of a shop is a must for tea lovers and this year sees the launch of the innovative coffee blossom scented white tea and black tea. With a memorable aroma, the coffee flowers are used in the same way as jasmine flowers are used to scent tea, culminating in a fabulously soothing and relaxing blend. 9 Dering Street, London W1S 1AG (020 7629 3654) www.postcardteas.com
