Lumpy custard and gravy so thin it wasn't there - you can't beat the school dinners of yesteryear. OK, so maybe they weren't the quickest way to your five-a-day but credit where credit's due - it took a lot of skill to make blancmange look that bad. Relive the recipes but make them taste better with these school dinner suggestions from 4Food.
Shepherd's pie
A classic British dish much loved by the ladies in nylon aprons. The potatoes might have been lumpy and the mincemeat a bit grey but the more creative dinner lady could add finesse by giving the over-boiled carrots a bit of a crimped effect.
If you like your mash minus the skin try this farmer's mince recipe. A posh grown up's pie that tastes delicious with or without the crimped veg.
