At first glance these can be mistaken for snails of the sea - but there's nothing slow and docile about these marine bad boys. Whelks feed by boring holes through the shells of their crustacean cousins - the crab or the lobster - and sucking up the soft white flesh.
Luckily for us, in the big food chain of life, they taste pretty darn delicious themselves, either doused in vinegar or cooked up in a chowder.
Try them for yourself in this tasty braised whelks recipe from Mitch Tonks at FishWorks.
