Mussels are found in their millions around the coast of Britain yet they're often considered courtesy of Belgian or French cuisine.
With their hard, brittle shells and earthy little beards it's easy to picture them as old men of the sea and indeed archaeologists believe they've been a source of human sustenance for thousands of years.
Smoked, boiled, steamed or fried - they taste delicious however you eat them but pair them with cockles in this luscious risotto recipe and they'll really come alive…alive oh!
