Sue Todd was a vegetarian for 20 years, until the lure of fish proved too much for her
After about 20 years of eating no meat or fish of any description, I recently started eating fish again. My original reasons for becoming a vegetarian were ethical - I didn’t want to condone the farming practices that many birds and animals suffered and I was concerned about over-fishing. Now, I’m ashamed to admit that I’m eating fish again simply because I like the taste and I’ve missed it. I’d been in one too many situations where the vegetarian option was just a bit dull, and the fish options seemed so tempting.
First of all though, I need to do the shopping. I recently moved to Holland, and I’m trying to learn Dutch. The main area I’m progressing nicely in is food vocabulary. But when it comes to fish and other specialist foods, it’s hard to find the translation for different species or varieties in a phrase book. Luckily I’ve just found the ‘Food Shopper’s Guide to Holland’, which details lots of classic Dutch dishes as well as having an extensive dictionary of herbs, spices, vegetables and grains, as well as fish. I can’t visually recognise all different types of fish yet - so this is going to be invaluable.
