Popping to the shop for a loaf in Victorian times could give you more than you bargained for as all sorts of unwanted extras could turn up in the dough. Keen to keep their bread free from lead, homemakers had to get handy with their dough mixer on a daily basis. Effectively, it was just a bucket with a windy handle but it sure beat sucking on a pencil.
