The bread slicer was considered the best thing, well, since sliced bread. Developed at a similar time to the pre-cut loaf this 1930s bread cutter allowed frugal families to thin down their dinner by shaving their slices into wafer thin wedges. It wasn't called the Depression for nothing.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
