Who hasn't found themselves foiled by those pesky butter thieves? Forever breaking into houses and making off with the yellow spread. Unfortunately this butter safe wasn't used to ward off robbers but to keep butter cool in a time before fridges. Effectively just a tin box, it probably wasn't much cop for keeping food cold forcing cooks to find a better way to keep the ice cream intact.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
