The hair curling properties of bread crusts is an alarming phenomenon maintained by mothers worldwide. But not every glamorous girly can pull off tumbling locks - and don't get us started on hairy chests. Thank heavens for this turn of the century crust scraper. Unwanted crusts or burnt bits of bread could be sanded down leaving diners free to snack with no unwanted side effects.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
