There's nothing worse than a dirty raisin – as every good grocer will know. This cumbersome contraption was used in grocery shops at the end of the 19th century to sort the wheat from the chaff, well the chaff from the raisins, but you get the idea.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
