It might look like a particularly daunting Victorian syringe but this tin contraption has a much pleasanter purpose. The domestic sausage maker was used to create custom-made bangers from the early 1900s. The filling would be popped in the centre with the skin squeezed over the funnel and a forceful push of the handle would produce scrumptious sausages every time.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
