The Jadkin butter spreader
It's an age old problem – you've got a lot of bread to butter and you're pushed for time. Cooks in the 1950s weren't prepared to settle for shoddy sarnies with hunks of uneven marge. They'd pop a block of butter into the metal slot and slide it across their bread to ensure an even spread.

Like the equivalent 'pie safe', it was designed to keep the enclosed food safe from isnects and rodents whilst they were held in a cool, dark, place, like a butter pantry or a basement.

Back when toasts were made over an open fire, at least a small amount of inedible char was impossible to avoid---crust scraping was really necessary.
