Fresh is best

One family we visited was from Huddersfield but lived in Grenoble, France. They had three lovely kids, lived right at the foot of the mountains and had an amazing garden, but when I went into their kitchen and opened their cupboards, I was hit by a wall of tinned baked beans.

The woman’s parents would drive down from Huddersfield every other week with a car full of ready-made meals and baked beans. Unbelievable.

Using fresh ingredients is the only way to guarantee a great taste and I can’t understand how on earth people can ignore fresh food. That’s where all the flavour is, all the goodness, and it’s a crime not to use it.

And that’s another problem. Kids are fussier these days about everything, and it’s the same with food. They judge the taste with their eyes, but I won’t have it. My son, Jack, told me the other day he didn’t like spinach. When I asked him why he just said 'I don’t know'. So I made him spinach and potato soup, but told him it was watercress. He loved it, and when he’d finished telling me he’d loved it, I told him it was spinach, bought locally, and grown in the garden. It’s all about getting them to try things.

We try to avoid giving our kids too much ketchup, because it’s very sweet, and it’s the sweetness they get addicted to. Instead, we make a big pot of roasted tomato purée - we just roast the tomatoes in the oven then use a hand blender to purée them. We don’t make the stuff every week, just a big pot every now and then. It’s only a matter of time then before they begin to prefer the taste of the fresh ingredients. And if your kids see you eating new dishes, they might be prepared to try them, too.
