The unmistakable voice behind the Come Dine With Me camera – Dave Lamb – tells Gina Schauffer what he really thinks of the cult show that highlights dinner party disasters across the country

Do your friends make you do the commentary at their dinner parties?

[Laughs] No, they don't!

And are you a keen cook?

No I’m not, I'm rubbish! My wife is a qualified chef, so I’ve gone into my shell as a chef since we've been married, because she really won’t hold back criticising my food. The first thing I did was cook her a stroganoff – first time we had a date – and she just literally had two mouthfuls and went 'no, er, I don't think so'. So this is very cathartic, watching other people cook nearly as badly as me.

Does she give you tips for the show?

I sometimes phone her for pronunciation of certain foods – not so much now, but in the early series. I mean more often than not the producers cover it – they write it out phonetically across the script, so that there's no confusion.

Dawn

Dawn from Come Dine With Me Preston

The disasters always make great TV – but to your knowledge, have there ever been any crazy mishaps e.g. the fire brigade called out?

I don't think that's happened. The one when someone was sick; they had to run from the table to be sick after they had a raw poached egg – that sticks in my mind. That’s quite a bad dinner party when your guests actually have to run to the loo, with cameraman following them down the corridor!

But Preston, famously, was the maddest week of television I’ve ever seen. As the only sane person in the week put it ‘you've chosen the four maddest people in Preston and put them in a room together'. And that’s exactly what it was like. They were crazy; the one woman Dawn not only ran away from a dinner party the night before – she jumped over the back fence and her husband was waiting for her in the car – but then on her night, she didn't cook. She cooked the starter and then she went 'oh you know what, I’m a bit tired' and went to bed! And they were all left sitting there with a camera crew, and had to cook their own mains!

  3. CONGRATULATIONS FOR MAKING ONE OF THE FUNNIEST PROGRAMMES ON TV AT THE MOMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The more I watch the more I'm addicted. Unfortunately my husband doesn't share my enthusiasm! Am looking for ways to get him to appreciate the hilarity of the show & Dave's witty, sarcastic banter.

  5. Hi Dave, you certainly have a wonderful skill and an amazing talent. Sincerely hope that you get as much satisfaction from your work as you give all of us. you have my wife and I in stitches! Not sure about the Eurovision comments... - I CAN hear you doing the Eurotrash voice-over though, for sure. Thanks also to Production Team, Camera, and Sound; "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts". Ignore the neg comments from the pedants - why DO they even bother wasting the time to type...? PLEEEZ...

  6. Dave Lamb..... what a fantastic voice over performer. The show brings all our family together on a Saturday evening : our 3 daughters aged 11 - 16, mum, 40 something, and me, Dad, 47. Dave Lamb's comments and enthusiasm make us all laugh and we find his comments hit the mark. Shame he can't be more acerbic but I suppose it is on early in the evening. Mr Lamb makes the show......

  7. Hi Dave, I (& many of my friends) really enjoy watching come dine with me particularly because of your well timed sarcastic comments! Keep up the good work. I like the fact that your commentary has become more exaggerated as the show has progressed. Good to see that you're doing so well. I wish you all the best. 9. Dear , dear Dave...you are the perfect voice for 'come dine with me'..your comments are so spot on and it's the only reason I watch the programme. As long as your comments are not racial, I don't care what anyone says or how much Dave makes on this job...he makes me laugh after a hard and difficult day at work myself. Thanks Dave!

  16. Normally I would avoid a reality show at all costs, but I absolutely love CDWM, and Dave, you make the show with your fantastic comments - often what I am thinking myself. You keep me stitches. Unfortunately, there are two words which you, and almost every other British person, mispronounce, and which drive me absolutely crazy. I grew up in Texas, near the Mexican border and know how to pronounce Spanish words, so when you pronounce them incorrectly it really grates on my ears. The first is 'chorizo'. It is pronounced 'cho-ree-tho', and the other is paella. In Spanish the double 'll' is pronounced as a 'y', so the word is pronounced as 'pa-ay-ya'. I don't think anyone in Britain, including Anne Robinson, can say that word correctly, so you could be a first!! I live in Portugal, so it would be interesting to have some Portuguese dishes and words to really get you going. Absolutely love the show - I think I'm addicted to it- and love your commentaries. Keep up the good work!!

Well done Channel 4 for putting out what would normally be another reality food show but some of the characters and situations, combined with your wittisisms makes us laugh from start to finish. Love the show and keep it up! Not sure what the aussie version will be like - i'm expecting not as good unless you narate with an aussie accent haha!

  78. I am addicted to this show, totally compulsive viewing and i agree with Dave Lamb that the one where that women said I'm a bit tired and just went to bed was just great viewing. His voiceover and comments just make the show ! and I hope be keeps doing it. ..Shame he is married, I wanted to have his babies!

  79. All right all right. The show is good. BUT don`t get big headed. It is better with you and indeed would not be as much fun without you but it would probably stand. May loose a few thousand watchers/listeners but hay. Keep up the cynicism it is your strength.AND try and look more like your voice. Like me you fail in this area and when first met after hearing the voice a small recoil is visible. Cool beans and keep up the humour.

  83. I think Dave Lamb's narrations on Come Dine with me are fantastic and really amuse me! I think its a brilliantly simple format, but so watchable! Four or five very different people, watching them cook and entertain while having a nosy around their house and the hilarious commentry is a winning formulae! Love the idea of Dave Lamb doing Eurovision!!!

We watch mostly for his commentry ha ha ha he's hilarious - give him a pay rise and get him to voice over the other dishwater moments on C4, maybe you could give him a go at BB. 104. Dave Lamb's commentary makes Come Dine With Me sooo watchable. He is absolutely brilliant. Incidentally, i notice that the TV channel LIVING markets its new show "Four Weddings" with the line "If you like Come Dine With Me, you'll love this"; all i can say is the narration is poor and boring in comparison, and as a result, the show, in my opinion is a flop. Keep up the good work Dave!

  107. One of my favourite weeks was the one in Dundee with Jimmy who made Haggis wrapped in steak and vegetables made to look like Bagpipes then Angel Delight for pudding: HILARIOUS! What topped it was using 'Jimmy Jimmy' by The Undertones to close that particular fiasco - I still laugh when I remember it. Dave's commentary along with some truly inspired selection of contestants makes this one of the funniest shows on TV - who'd have thought a show about dinner parties could be so funny?! Long may it continue.

  108. I listen to Radio 4, I watch BBC4, University Challenge (I'm as pompous as some of the contestants..)yet I'm hooked on CDWM! Here's the thing - it has nothing to do with cooking and everything to do with peering into people's houses, watching people's funny little ways, scrabbling to win a fairly small prize. But most of all the commentary!I knew it must be a script (the writer/s should get more credit) but it doesn't surprise me to hear there's some ad-libbing on Lamb's part.My son's 19, a student, and he's as hooked as I am.And the added touch of choosing different theme music to match the contestant - sometimes it's very naughty of you.Posturing, talking behind each other's backs, tempers, snobbishness (mine and theirs)plus blindingly funny, beautifully delivered commentary - it's comedy and drama. Does anyone else have to fast-forward bits because they're just too excruciating?Like the woman who "treated" everyone to some musical theatre (aaaagh!).I love the way it shows people from all classes, races and backgrounds - council flats to castles. But here's the question: Why do people do it?When they know that the editor/scriptwriter can make them look even more drunk/silly/pompous/nasty than they actually are? Is it the money or maybe people really will do anything to "be on the telly"? God love 'em - I'm just glad they do and long may it continue. One thing though - I really don't like the "celebrity" version - a bunch of z-listers with over-respectful editing (they probably insist on approving it before it airs) - no, give us the general public everytime - there's nowt so funny as folks. And David Lamb's delivery of course.

  123. I got into come dine with me in the very early series and enjoyed it a lot because I mainly found it interesting seeing how some people get along and others don't like each other and in those older episodes, Dave Lamb (as mentioned in the interview) was funny but a lot more laid back. In the newer episodes I not only watch it because it is interesting but because it is so funny. I laugh so much I cannot control my self. When I look back at the older episodes, I think its a different narrator because it is very different. I think it is safe to say the new episodes are the best.

  138. Just love the programme and have watched it from the beginning and I agree that the voiceover is the best part of it and hasn't Dave's comments improved with age. Of course it has a lot to do with the mix of dinner party guests and their weird and wonderful behaviour (and sometimes inedible dishes), but I am constantly being entertained and get a hugh amount of enjoyment for the programme. I am so addicted now I record it and watch again and again. Incidentally, a current programme on digital is a blatant rip off of Come Dine With Me, but voiceover is no where as good. 157. I don't think people should be allowed to re-score contestants on 'Come Dine With Me' as the last person is at a disadvantage because the scores are revealed on the night of their party.

  162. Yes Mick, there is a different show featuring diners who stay overnight. So has Dave Lamb been the voice-over from the start? I came on here to find out if that is Dave Lamb's voice in the earlier series (am also watching CDWM on E4 at 2.0pm) as the voice sounds so different, but I keep missing the credits!

  168. I love this show purely for the hilarious wit and sarcasm of its presenter Dave Lamb, he should be on tv more presenting he would be great for the likes of big brother or eurovision. he has me in stitches while watching the show so come one ch4 use him more for voiceovers.

  169. My mum and (very square) sister used to watch this programme when it first started, i thought it was rubbish. Since Dave's started making his hilarious comments, I've become an avid watcher and have almost started my own 'Come Dine With Me' cult, having recruited so many friends/family members. Well done for making this into a truly entertaining show.

  174. Dave just wanted to say I adore the show and watch all of them time and time again. I think its without doubt the best show on tv by far. Not only is ite entertaining but you learn some good recipes. You are the best presenter on tv and have me in stitches with your remarks and I would recommend you show outtakes as a one off show as it would be a huge hit to see the bits we dont see!! I was close to getting on the show when I appled last year and Ben called me to say the only reason I was'nt chosen was because I live 13 miles outside Glasgow I was so disappointed because I think id have given people a good laugh and some great food but hey ho thats life! Keep the episodes coming for years to come!!!!!!

  176. My husband and I absolutely love the show in particular we wait for the David's comments and howl with laughter as more often than not he says what we are thinking and more besides. I too am surprised that not many of the diners go down with food poisoning. If I'm in a bad mood my husband searches for repeats for me to watch - non of the recipes have appeared on my dining room table yet though.

  178. The programe is brilliant and David comments makes it very enjoyable. He's the ice on the cake!! The only downside of the programe x me is the lack of hygiene displayed in some shows by the contestants. Quite scary!! This might give a wrong idea to viewers about health & safe's standards to take while cooking.

In ever series we love the narrating, the witty and delightful jokes make our day, everyday. I say we should have a special student version of come dine with me, in our flat!Of course Mr Lamb himself would have to be in attendance or else its a no goer! much love flat 101 x

  185. The programme is even more 'entertaining' to us onlookers as much as for the dinner guests, and combined with Dave Lamb's comments, makes for enjoyable viewing. But it would be compelling TV to have a Come Dine With Me Special.......... with Dave Lamb (and others normally behind the production) being the 4 - 5 hosts! Wow. Wouldnt that be a hoot. Of course the commentary would have to be another character, and I nominate Biggins! What do you think of that then? Liz Roberts -a regular viewer.

  189. I absolutely love Come Dine with Me and even watch the repeats! I think the voiceover by Dave Lamb is what so makes the show. He has such funny one-liners. Very well done! Would love to see more Scottish parties in the future. Although I rate myself as a fairly decent cook, I would be far too scared to subject myself to a television disaster. Great viewing - please keep it going for a long time to come. Beats all the other cookery programmes hands down!

  194. Hi I love Sunday afternoons watching the repeats of this show. What I don't love it the new format ie four contestants in one hour. It just doesn't work for me or for any of my friends who watch (6 of us watch and text each Sunday). The 45 mins per contestant is much better. You get a feel for the person and I love the bit when they go around the house. Bring back the old format please

  197. I have written in an extolling way previously but I am now volunteering to be president of the Colin Lamb fan club. Clearly loads of other people share my opinions about his commentaries on Come Dine with me. Living on one's own - well apart from my scrobby 20 year old daughter who never surfaces from her bedroom - one tends to sit there watching progs in silence but regularly listening to Colin's cracks regularly cause laugh out loud episodes. Watching today was a case in point so much so that I had to phone a mate's wife to share the moment. The comment? Our Sunderland nightclub owner asking if the lobster he was buying was fresh with Colin remarking that the fact that they were still moving might be a bit of a give-away. If I agree to go ahead with forming the Colin Lamb fan club could you ask the great man if he would agree to issuing a special Xmas single, limited edition t-shirts, an annual Colin Lamb get-together at the Holiday Inn just off junction 26 on the M1 etc for fan club members.
