We've been knocking this question around the office all week but were blown away by the answer of Tommi Miers, star of Wild Gourmets.

"Dog" she explains. "I was in Guatemala and we were taken out to the jungle for dinner by the chief of police. I thought it was rabbit, but there aren't many rabbits in the jungle. Plenty of wild dogs though, which are regarded as a pest. So it makes a kind of sense."

Everyone's eaten weird stuff. A straw poll here throws up such things as horse, octopus salami and 120 squid in a week. But what's the oddest, most bizarre and offbeat thing - edible or otherwise - that you've ever tasted? Let us know what you think in the user comments below.

  1. On a flight to iceland once i had puffin as an airline meal, it was very chewy and didnt really have a taste. Here in Australia the super markets stock kangaroo which my dad sometimes has, it apparently has alot of nutrional value. My boyfriend (while working as a deckhand out on the Great Barrier Reef) caught and ate a shark, he said it was very tough and didnt enjoy it.

  3. I suppose the most exotic thing I've eaten was kangaroo, but I didn't like it enough to pay the high prices it fetches here (same cost problem with wild boar, but that was much nicer...). I've eaten horse (gorgeous), octopus (ditto - but not in salami), squid (yawn!) etc. I'll try most things as long as they are cooked first (or, with something like raw sashimi, prepared by an expert), unless they include bones/spines/shell - basically: crunchy bits - that are difficult to remove. I'm surprised (and not in a good way!) by the attitude of people who won't eat relatives of "Babar" the Elephant (or "Lassie" or "Black Beauty"), but regularly have "Bambi" (i.e. venison) on their menues... Oh, and I've eaten eel in London, so I don't think of that as exotic. I agree about the horrid tiny bones though!

  4. When I worked in safaris in Zimbabwe I ate just about everything that wandered through the bush. Especially good were impala, warthog, eland and buffalo. However the two strangest were snake (puff adder - rather like frogs legs) and elephant (a joint slow roasted over an open fire tasted rather like rare beef). My tracker was a local Tonga guy and he would eat the Vervet monkeys like in your show. However he would not eat Baboons deeming them too close to humans.

  5. I ate stewed eel in vietnam. It tasted a bit fishy, but had so many tiny bones that it was impossible to eat! Yuk.
