What you've got: Flimsy, narrow window boxes in an exposed area on a busy main road. On a plus side it gets good light all day round.
Gareth says: You may wish to avoid vegetables that require large pots such as potatoes and other root vegetables, so as not to put too much weight on the structure. Most veg would be happy here, and it looks like there is room for a decent sized grow bag.
I would be very tempted to make the most of the railings and opt for a trailing variety, which would look great. Try runner beans, or for something more glamorous, nasturtiums, which will provide plenty of colour and make a peppery tasting addition to a bland salad. They are very simple to grow and will provide a great amount of flowers too. The seed can be easily collected to sow again, free, the next year.
