What you've got: Shady decking sheltered by overgrowing brambles from the neighbour’s garden. High walls that limit sunlight but offer shelter from the wind.
Gareth says: If you can’t beat them why not join them? Purchase thorn-less brambles which can be trained up any wall and will provide lots of blackberries for the freezer. Blackberries are an easy fruit to grow. They are extremely tolerant of site and soil conditions and will produce a reasonable crop even in deeply shady spaces.
