You don't need acres of land or even an allotment to grow your own food. Gardening guru, Gareth Farr, tells 4Food how to grow fruit and veg in even the smallest urban spaces.
What you've got: A sheltered back garden with high walls and little light. Stony soil and more snails than you can shake a stick, though weeds seem to grow in abundance.
Gareth says: First remove all the weeds and dig the soil. Add fresh compost to beef up the quality of the soil as it looks quite poor.
Rhubarb would be a good choice for this space. It likes partial shade and once you've planted it you'll be harvesting from it for years. It should also tolerate slug attacks. Avoid tasty things like beans, courgettes and radish as slugs love these.
