Kasinthula Cane Growers in Malawi
Malawi's access to EU markets is restricted to a set quota. Although the price they get for their sugar covers their cost of production, and should ultimately bring them a decent income, the farmers are barely able to pay themselves a living wage while they are paying off their huge debts.
Fairtrade sales will generate extra income, which is to be earmarked for community development projects. The first priority will be to provide clean water to three villages that do not yet have their own communal water supply, and then to build a secondary school and health clinic.
