Game seasons are in place to protect wildlife breeding stock. Richard Townsend from Yorkshire Game, and sponsor of Game to Eat, tells 4Food where to go to bag good game and when to get your gun out

Where to get started

Land in the UK is privately owned and shooting rights are jealously protected. A vast amount of the UK is managed for shooting and big estates typically offer commercial shoots on a day by day basis. You can approach an estate through an agent, or directly, which is cheaper.

The estate will charge you per bird shot. Expect to pay between £20 to £40 per bird depending on their quality and how challenging they are to shoot. You will need a shotgun certificate if you want your own gun though you can accompany a certificate holder and use their gun if they accompany you at all times.

Buy it

Don't fancy pulling the trigger? Local butchers will stock game in season and it is becoming increasingly common in supermarkets. You can order game online from suppliers such as Yorkshire Game, Donald Russell and Blackface.

  1. i can and as often as possible do pull the trigger. it is because of people like me that there is so much wildlife in the countryside. we maintain a small shoot near derby that shoots pheasant, partridge, duck and out of season rabbit and pigeon. if we didn't shoot the rabbits and pigeons the farmers would find alternative ways to control these pests. they would poison the rabbits and shoot the pigeons themselves, at least when we do it we eat our quarry.

  2. I can and do pull the trigger, i shoot for pests and vermin. Although i love nature and love to see rabbits etc out and about at the same time i would like to shoot them. its about the skill involved, they are far more challenging than any target shot from resting on a bench plus it gets you out and about in nature walking through woods in your camo gear or driving across fields in a 4x4 lamping for foxes. Just because we shoot doesnt make us gun nuts or nature haters. Most of what i shoot will be eaten by myself and if not sold on for restaurants or dog/cat food etc. nothing is wasted
